One Tree Hill to eturn for Season 5

Returning for its fifth season to the town of Tree Hill, this drama revolves around the lives of two young men, Lucas and Nathan, who have little in common aside from their love for hoops and the fact that they share the same father. The star of the high school basketball team, Nathan hails from a wealthy family, while his half-brother Lucas is the only child of a single mom. The inhabitants of Tree Hill have witnessed Lucas' metamorphosis from loner to high school basketball star, Nathan and Haley's troubled marriage, and Peyton and Brooke's tumultuous friendship. While the teenagers struggle to find their places in the world, the adults in Tree Hill continue to deal with the residue of decisions they made years ago. The series stars Chad Michael Murray as Lucas Scott, James Lafferty as Nathan Scott, Hilarie Burton as Peyton Sawyer, Bethany Joy Galeotti as Haley James, Paul Johansson as Dan Scott, Sophia Bush as Brooke Davis, Barbara Alyn Woods as Deb Scott, Barry Corbin as Whitey Durham and Moira Kelly as Karen Roe. ONE TREE HILL is from executive producer and show creator Mark Schwahn ("Coach Carter"), executive producers Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins, Joe Davola ("Smallville") and Greg Prange for Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

In a strategy designed to give producers time to make a significant creative change, the hit drama ONE TREE HILL will be held until midseason. When it returns, the story will have advanced four years and the characters will have already graduated from college. Online digital diaries will premiere in the fall, allowing fans to learn what happened during the college years, and will lead into the midseason series return.

"One Tree Hill" Gets the nod for one more season!

By Allison Ballard Staff Writer allison.ballard@starnewsonline.com

Television insiders following the progress of One Tree Hill aren’t surprised the WB drama will be back for a third season. After all, the current season has seen double-digit growth in women viewers and people under 34 since it premiered in 2003.

“I didn’t doubt that they’d pick it up again,” said Bethany Joy Lenz, who plays Haley James Scott on the series.

But it wasn’t until Tuesday, when the network officially announced its upcoming fall season, that fans could breathe a sigh of relief.

Now locals are waiting to see if the series will return to film in Southeastern North Carolina.

“It feels good, because for so long we’ve been the dark-horse contender, the underdog,” said series creator Mark Schwahn about the renewal.

One Tree Hill originally was scheduled as a midseason replacement show for the 2003-2004 season. When the premiere date was bumped up to fall 2003, with little preceding hype, the ratings were low.

“A lot of people predicted we wouldn’t make it,” he said.

On Tuesday, WB executives called OTH the fastestgrowing show on television. With an average audience this season of 3.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research, the show is tied with Everwood as the third highest-rated show on its network, behind 7th Heaven (4 million) and Gilmore Girls (3.5 million).

This fall, OTH will anchor The WB’s Wednesday night schedule, airing at 8 p.m. The drama has aired at 9 p.m. Tuesdays for two years. A new series, Related, from Friends creator Marta Kauffman, will follow One Tree Hill. It’s about four adult sisters navigating career, romance and life.

The next decision for the One Tree Hill producers involves whether the show will continue to film locally at Screen Gems Studios.

“Creatively, they’ve asked me, and I said I’d like to stay in Wilmington,” Mr. Schwahn said. “Our exteriors are ingrained in the show.

“But I do fear we’ll be someone’s bottom line. The threat of moving the show is still real, it’s still there.”

If the state passes film incentives, it will be a good step to keeping the show here, he said.

“I think for the third season, we’ll be in Wilmington. Beyond that, I get the sense that if initiatives aren’t in place.».».and South Carolina has been so aggressive... we’d really need to look hard.”

Mr. Schwahn also said the network ordered more episodes, a total of 26, for next season. That’s four more than the first season and three more than the current season, which airs its final episode 9 p.m. Tuesday.

After the third season, OTH cast and crew will have completed 71 episodes, if everything goes according to plan.

“The magic number is 100 for syndication,” said Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission. Syndication is a moneymaking marker for television producers. The more episodes the series has, the more valuable it is.

“After this season, they’ll be three-fourths of the way there,” Mr. Griffin said. “So as long as the numbers are good, it looks positive for a season four and five.”

One Tree Hill stars Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty as two half-brothers who compete on their high school basketball team. Hilarie Burton, Paul Johansson, Sophia Bush, Barry Corbin, Barbara Alyn Woods, Craig Sheffer and Moira Kelly also star.   Allison Ballard: 343-2376 allison.ballard@starnewsonline.com
