NBC, Wednesday 9-10
The pace of this inside-the-White House
series (from Adam Sorkin, who also created ABC's Sports
Night) is so frenetic you may need a stiff drink before
it's all over. This is Beltway humor that's definitely below
the belt. Rob Lowe plays the craven Sam Seaborn, a deputy
communications director who slept with a hooker--and he's
just one of a troublesome staff. It's up to Martin Sheen--a
kind of "President Knows Best"--to keep them in line. He's
basically playing the same character Michael Douglas did in
Sorkin's The American President, projecting earnest
goodness and all that. It's a little hard to fathom in the
Clinton era, but maybe this is a bridge to the next
millennium. The show has potential and some good writing,
but it'll take time to see if it can develop into anything
more substantial.
