The Desperate Kingdom of Love
Season Two Premiere Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Greg Prange September 21, 2004

What's the drama: We open season two at a funeral home-everyone is there…mourning. Dan is in the casket. As Deb approaches her dead husband (or her ex-husband at this point…we're not exactly sure) suddenly his arm reaches out and grabs her. Dan yells, "You killed me you bitch."

Alas, it was just Deb's dream. Dan is alive and in a hospital bed. She sits watch. Across town Haley and Nathan wake up next to each other and admit they both had a dream they got married. Oh, but that wasn't a dream. They really are married. They nuzzle in bed. The cell phone brings them back to reality. It's a call from Deb. She gives Nathan the news about Dan's heart attack. Just wait to see what type of health failure Dan experiences when he finds out the kids got hitched. The newlyweds head to the hospital.

Keith and Lucas are excited about starting anew in their new ocean-side town. Though, the bad news about Dan hits hard, despite the fact that neither of them like the guy. Lucas feels a little bit bummed because he kind of hopes the guy dies. Didn't really see that one coming. Meanwhile, the Brooke and Peyton reunion tour has begun. The gals take Brooke's father's boat out for a spin. Craziness and good old-fashioned chick bonding ensues.

What's up with Lucas: Keith continues to unpack and Lucas tells him that he feels like unpacking seems like a waste. He knows they are ultimately going to go back to Tree Hill. Keith wants to stay and so they weigh their options. Should they stay or should they go? The "stay" side is pretty stacked but the one reason Lucas decides that he needs to return to Tree Hill is Nathan. He feels like his brother probably needs him right now. Keith continues to fight the leaving-he has some ghosts he's not proud of that he left on the Hill (oh yeah, he slept with his brother's wife). So he's not exactly feeling like heading back.

What's up with Deb: Deb is feeling a little guilty about not calling the paramedics earlier when she found Dan nearly passed out on the floor of the beach house. She took the time to argue with her soon-to-be ex before dialing 9-1-1. The doctor makes it even worse when he tells Deb that Dan's condition could have been brought on by excessive stress.

What's up with Karen: Karen pays a visit to see Whitey in the hospital. He doesn't say what is ailing him but the visit isn't about that anyway. It's about Karen. She has a pretty bad case of empty nest syndrome. Whitey tells Karen to live her life-go out and do everything. She doesn't want to get to be his age and have regrets. Take a few chances. As she heads out of the hospital, Karen runs into Deb sobbing in the hall. Deb tells her it's all her fault that Dan is going to die. The two head to the café and Karen gets the news about the marriage. The two decide that they wish Keith was there. He's good in a crisis.

What's up with Peyton: While out on Brooke's dad's boat the gals enjoy a little sunning and admit that they kind of miss Lucas. Peyton even admits that she really misses Jake. After they skinny-dip Brooke tells Peyton that she is bummed that Lucas didn't even bother to say goodbye when he left town. Peyton finally presents her with the letter Lucas left for them. But the letter is a day late and Brooke gets mad at her best buddy all over again. Peyton tells Brooke that she didn't share the letter because they were having so much fun. She didn't want to blow it with boy stuff. They were such good friends before guys came into the picture. That night the girls discuss the letter and try to decide if they should read the letter. Peyton decides it's time to stop chasing boys and start focusing on herself. Brooke concurs and they throw the letter into the fire without looking at it. Hopefully it wasn't money.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan attempts to console his worried mother. Haley tells Mrs. Scott that they're there for her…whatever she needs. Then they break the news that they got married. Deb loses it. She forgets her own guilt about Dan's illness and puts the blame on Nathan and Haley. It's their fault that Dan had the heart attack. Nathan abandoned him and Haley helped him. It's their fault. Well…whatever helps Deb sleep at night.

What's up with Haley: Haley and Nathan pay a visit to the James parental unit. The couple is very pleased that Nathan didn't come through Haley's window-he actually found the door this time. Nathan asks Jimmy and Lydia for permission to marry their daughter. The jokes stop but they are surprisingly understanding about the marital situation. Jimmy and Lydia talk and decide that their daughter is smart, has never done anything without thinking it through so they give Haley and Nathan their blessing. Hey-Haley's folks are pretty cool. Wonder why she doesn't spend more time at home? Later Haley pays a visit to Karen at the Café. She asks Karen how she feels. Karen tells the youngster that she is nervous. She knows that she is in love but she was also in love in high school…and sometimes love fades. Karen hopes this doesn't happen to her.

What's up with Keith: Keith tells Lucas that if they leave and head back to Tree Hill they may never come back. Why should he and Lucas have to give up a dream and a new chance at life because of Dan who has never done anything for them? Keith wants one single reason why they should go back to Tree Hill. Lucas tells him, because he's his brother.

What's up with Dan: Mainly comatose.

How does it all wrap up: Lucas pays a call to his brother Nathan. It's weird for them but he wants Nathan to know that he's there for him. Just call if he needs anything. They share a cellular moment.

The doctor tells Whitey that he has a tumor that is pressing on his brain. The coach prepares for a very risky surgery…alone. Later at the young Scott home, Haley attempts to alphabatise her and Nathan's CDs. She freaks that she and Nathan don't have one single duplicate in their CD collection. They don't' belong together! She's not a wife-she's not even a senior! She wants to go home. Nathan assures her that despite the fact that no one else believes in their marriage, they are forever and he will always protect her.

Meanwhile, as Brooke and Peyton enjoy a little girl time at the bonfire, Lucas walks up. Surprise! He's home. Hope he doesn't ask about the letter. Deb sits at Dan's hospital bedside alone as he sleeps. Suddenly Keith walks in. He's home. Deb is so relieved that she jumps up and hugs the man…just then Dan opens his eyes.

Truth Doesn't Make A Noise
Written by Mark B. Perry Directed by Bill Dickson September 28, 2004

What's the drama: Dan is experiencing the "Phoenix Effect" after his heart attack. The sky is bluer, he's remorseful and introspective, he forgives Deb for her infidelity with his brother Keith and he's ready to sign the divorce papers. He seems to be a changed man. For now.

Lucas wants to call a truce with the girls and throw a wedding reception party for Nathan and Haley. After all, Peyton rocks a party like no one else and Brooke plans like no other, plus, he figures it'll bring the three of them back together as friends again. The girls agree and Lucas wants to discuss the letter because the contents were a little embarrassing for him. But they tell him not to mention it-ever again. They later wonder what that letter could have said.

What's up with Lucas: Skills wants to know why Lucas returned from Charleston and he admits that it is his extended family…the same reason he fled. Lucas tries to tell his old friends that Nathan has turned out to be a really good guy and he actually gets them to help him with the wedding reception.

What's up with Haley: Haley stops by the Scott household to drop off a bunch of flowers for Dan. Deb gives her a chilly reception and tells her to take it to him in the hospital herself. Haley tells her that she's not sorry she married her son but she is sorry about the way they ambushed her with the news. And speaking of receptions, Haley invites Deb to the party. Deb is disgusted with the idea of a party as Nathan's father still sits in the hospital and she informs her new daughter-in-law that she refuses to support the ruining of her son's life. And take it from her, she'll ruin her own life as well. It's obvious that Deb is speaking from experience. After the confrontation Haley runs home to mope. Her mother tells her that in-laws are always difficult, and her father tells her not to worry about them. If she lets them get the best of her and runs home every time they have a blow up she'll never leave the house.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan comes to his mother's house to rag on her about the verbal knives she threw his new wife. It comes out that Deb hasn't told Dan about the nuptials (and why would she really?) so it's up to Nathan to be the "adult." When Nathan does come to the hospital to tell his dad about his marriage it's not what he expects. Dan waxes poetic about the past and his mistakes (not Nathan's but HIS), and the fact that you get to a stage when you realize that you just have to live with them. Then Dan does the unthinkable. He asks Nathan to ask his brother to come see him in the hospital. When Nathan tells Lucas that Dan wants to see him, he advises Lucas to stay away. The best thing he ever did was split from his parents. Lucas takes his advice.

What's up with Peyton: Peyton and Brooke contemplate not seeing guys after the Lucas fiasco, but Brooke finds a half dozen emails sent to Jake from Peyton. Peyton tells her she wants to shake things up after Lucas, but she hasn't heard back from Jake anyway.

What's up with Keith: Keith pays a visit to Karen to return Lucas' Ipod that he left in the truck and there's clearly still tension between him and his non-lady-love. It may have been a good idea for Lucas to return to Tree Hill but perhaps Keith should have stayed behind and started his new life. There's nothing there with Karen.

What's up with Karen: Lucas wants to know why Karen threw out the college course catalogs. She admits that she was going to take a couple of classes and changed her mind. He tells her she should go for it. It can't wait.

What's up with Whitey: Keith tries to visit Whitey at the hospital but discovers that he checked himself out-pretty risky so soon after brain surgery and all. Dan still sits in his hospital room and he didn't have major surgery. Rather than deal with his problems Whitey hassles Keith about not visiting Dan while he was right there in the hospital. Keith tells him the guy most likely won't want to see him-he slept with Deb. Whitey tells him not to see the guy after all.

What's up with Deb: Lucas and the gals throw a great party, it seems like the entire town turns out for the festivities…including Deb. She even brings a gift. Deb tells Karen that she doesn't know what the kids are up against since she didn't get married at a young age the way she did. Oops-open mouth, insert foot. Karen is clearly hurt and Deb feels stupid. When Haley asks Deb to come meet her parents, she pretends she just got a call from Dan and has to take it. Now who is the adult in this scenario?

What's up with Dan: He's thrilled when Keith finally comes to pay a visit. Dan tells his brother he has turned over a new leaf. Keith offers to help out by taking care of the business for him and shock of all shocks, Dan is okay with it…not only okay but he's happy to have Keith's help. Guess Keith and Lucas are back in Tree Hill for good.

How does it all wrap up: Haley's folks break the news that they have sold the house and bought an RV, something they swore they'd do once the last chicken flew the coop. They'll be leaving town but be back for surprise visits from time to time. When Haley's folks finally meet Deb she gets ugly. They try to be congenial but Deb just can't go there. She yells at them, telling them that it's partially their fault for not being good parents and stopping the wedding before it started. Surprisingly Haley jumps in, telling Deb that it's one thing to yell at her but it's totally uncool for her to yell at her parents and if she can't deal then maybe she should go. Didn't see that one coming from little Haley. Later when she feels bad about yelling at Deb, Nathan tells her she couldn't have made their situation any worse. But later when Deb admits to Dan that she did make things worse, he tells her not to worry. Dan promises that together they'll get their son back. Later Brooke and Peyton admit that they burned the letter and Lucas is glad-none of it matters anymore, all that does matter is that the three of them are going to be okay. And finally, Lucas pays a visit to Dan.

Near Wild Heaven
Written by J. Stoteraux and C. Fiveash Directed by Greg Prange October 5, 2004

What's the drama: Tim is jones'n hard for a bachelor party (and he wishes he could have tuxed it out as the best man too). He tells Nathan that some of them remember the guy he used to be so he plans the big soiree, naked chicks and all. Brooke retaliates for Haley with a shower (read Bachelorette party).

Keith is doing great at Dan's dealership, plus the suit and tie look good on him. He invites Lucas to come work for him but the kid ain't exactly prepared to get a check signed by Dan Scott just yet. Lucas finally visits Dan in the hospital as he requested. As soon as Lucas walks in the door Dan does something he should have a long time ago…he apologizes…for everything. Lucas freaks out a little. Let's face it, no one is used to the kinder gentler Dan Scott. Lucas asks him if they'd even be having the conversation if he wasn't on the outs with Nathan. Dan assures him no. He tells Lucas that he wants him to trust him. Dan asks Lucas to put a copy of the paperwork he brought him in the lock box in his office and tells him that the key is taped under the desk drawer. Later, at Dan's office Lucas browses through the lock box and sees the history of his young life in photos and newspaper clippings. Dan has been following his life this whole time.

Haley plays crazy housewife, straightening up for Nathan's bachelor party and the "skanky ho" who is certain to be attending. Haley is clearly uncomfortable with the whole bachelor party that Tim is throwing. But Nathan assures his new bride that Tim is threatened by Lucas throwing them a reception and this is his way of doing his part. Haley goes to Lucas who offers to sacrifice himself up for the night to watch over the boys. He'll go to the party.

What's up with Brooke: The wild one rents a party bus for Haley's "shower" and even breaks out the pricey champagne on Daddy's credit card. Haley thinks the shower will be "nice and normal" but nothing is nice and normal when the evening kicks off with a lingerie fashion show. Things continue to heat up when Haley tries on some of the lingerie herself. And thanks to Brooke, according to the state of North Dakota she's of legal drinking age.

What's up with Haley: The girls stop off at a strip club where Brooke has rented out the back. They get a little lesson on the art of stripping and how to work the dreaded poll. The gals live it up big time until Mr. Davis' credit cards are all declined.

What's up with Nathan: Tim's big bachelor party gets off to a slow start with only Lucas, Tim and Nathan's nerdy boss attending. To make matters worse Tim busts out the porn that stars his skanky stepmother. Disgusting. When a couple of real female cops witness Skills and the boys carrying a keg up the stairs they come up to Nathan's apartment to investigate. Tim mistakes the women in uniform for strippers and gets down and dirty with the officers. So they arrest him.

What's up with Dan: Dan is being released from the hospital very soon and the doctor tells him he needs to make radical lifestyle changes. Dan asks Deb if he can come home. Her guilt runs pretty deep so she reluctantly okays the prospect.

What's up with Keith: Keith shows up at Karen's Café for coffee and they finally have a heart to heart. Keith admits that he doesn't think that they can go back to being the close friends that they were before he proposed to her and she denied him. Karen pleads that they don't need to cut each other out of their lives completely and he tells her that it's not what he wants but that's the way it'll have to be.

What's up with Lucas: He tells Nathan he should take the job at the dealership and Nathan takes it. It pays much better than his fast food gig. The two brothers discuss Dan and Nathan admits that the collection of Lucas memorabilia is part of the reason he was jealous of him when they were growing up. Nathan tells Lucas he should go ahead and test the waters with Dan and he should know that whatever happens it won't affect their relationship. They let Dan come between them before and that won't happen again.

What's up with Deb: After Dan tells Deb he wants to come home instead of moving back to the beach house, she goes for some coffee (and liquor) at Karen's Café. Deb admits that she's nervous about Dan coming home. The divorce is not final and she thinks that maybe the heart attack is a sign. Karen tells her friend that it's a sign that she needs to stop worrying about Dan and start taking care of herself for once.

What's up with Peyton: After Brooke's credit cards are all declined the girls gather up $140 to pay for the thousand dollar bill. Brooke tells Peyton that she can "work off" the bill. She's prepared to get a little dirty. So the girls work off the strip club bill…in the kitchen. They wash dishes. Talk about dirty. Haley is a little inebriated so the girls excuse her from kitchen duty and she takes the limo home to her husband.

How does it all wrap up: Nathan's bachelor party is a bust so the guys split. And bad timing of all bad timing…that's when the stripper Simone finally arrives. Nathan tells her to forget it, the party is over but she wants to stay. Simone tells Nathan that her services have already been paid for. She calls a cab and they play a little Playstation. After awhile she confesses that she didn't call a cab, she's attracted to him and heck, she's already paid for. She strips down and struts into the bedroom telling the young newlywed to decide what he wants. As Simone saunters into Nathan's bedroom Haley's limo pulls up outside. Nathan admits to Haley that the stripper was pretty good…at NBA Live. Other than that he wasn't interested in her at all. He must have told the stripper to pound sand before his wife got home. Looks like Dan isn't the only Scott who has changed.

Lucas thanks Keith for the job offer and explains that he can't accept it but he did give the job to Nathan. Keith is happy with either Scott brother working with him. Knowing that his mom needs him, Lucas offers to take care of things at the café when she's off at school. After the denial of all her father's credit cards, Brooke attempts to take some money out of the ATM and finds insufficient funds. Maybe she can get a job doing dishes at the strip club permanently.

As they prepare to leave the hospital and head home Deb tells Dan that she spoke to their lawyers and there's no way they can legally invalidate Nathan's marriage. Dan suggests that they won't have to take that drastic measure, the newlyweds are young and soon when things get tough Nathan and Haley will realize that they made a big mistake. Their relationship will most likely self-destruct with no outside help. Later as Deb helps Dan hobble up to the house, Lucas arrives and tells Dan that the photos in the lock box don't change a thing (as he helps his father in his house). But he will work with him to rehab. Dan tells Lucas that he can't change the past but he certainly plans on making some changes in their future.

You Can't Always Get What You Want
Written by Jennifer Cecil
Directed by Joanna Kerns

October 12, 2004

What's the drama: Brooke awakes one morning to a hot Spanish speaking fella swimming in her family's pool. She assumes he's the pool boy. She talks down to him and tells him in Spanglish that he's not to swim in her pool. He gets it and ends up getting out of the pool…in the buff. Haley found a car on the internet for $500 but Nathan is hoping to spend their hard earned cash on something cool like TiVo, but he promises he'll take a look at it. Nathan asks Keith to help him check out the car since he doesn't know anything about them. Keith agrees to help him if he promises to not let anyone at the dealership find out about his lack of auto knowledge.

Peyton comes to visit Karen at the Café in order to get a little information from a female who runs a business. She wants to start an all ages club but keeps getting denied. Karen encourages her to continue to keep up the good fight-all she needs is one backer. Dan is depressed and withdrawn now that he's home-he just sits around watching TV. He wants to order yard gnomes and apparently refuses to shave. When Lucas overhears Deb tell this to Karen he heads over to Dan's and offers to take a walk with him. Lucas encourages him to take it easy but Dan is a go-getter as usual. As they walk Dan asks about Nathan and Lucas tells him how happy he is at the dealership. Dan ends the walk there and then. He's obviously peeved.

What's up with Karen:
Karen starts business classes at the local college. The first person she meets in class is Andy Hargrove, the professor. He lectures on Greed (what is this guy-Gordon Gecko?). Karen tells the class that you don't need to be ruthless to be successful. Professor Hargrove tells her that he agrees-everybody but Karen flunks the first lesson. Karen runs into her professor and they end up having coffee together (oh by the way…he's hot and super rich!). Professor Hottie ends up telling Karen that he quit a big 50 million dollar business because he wasn't happy. He's still rich though right? Later Karen starts really thinking about expanding the Café to include a bar. He's quite a professor that Andy Hargrove.

What's up with Brooke: The pool boy takes Brooke's parking spot at school. He's driving an even better convertible than she is. When she confronts him she realizes that he speaks English. And he's her new wealthy neighbor. He flirts with her and tells her that this "thing" they share is inevitable. New neighbor thinks that they have chemistry. Brooke is unimpressed even though she's seen him naked.

What's up with Mouth: Brooke's neighbor and new guy on campus Felix asks Mouth to show him around the school-not so much the cafeteria and the classes but more like a tour of the chicks. During the tour Mouth learns that Felix's folks are Doctors Without Borders and the kid has been to eight different schools in the past ten years. Young Felix also knows how to read people. With parents that are so giving and cool you'd think that Felix would be a little less abrasive and arrogant.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan likes the cardboard cutout of his father standing at the dealership better than the real thing recuperating at home. Lucas tells his brother that he may have blown it by telling Dan that he's working at the dealership. He tells Nathan that Dan is acting strange and refusing to rehab. He'd like to help now that he's got this second chance at Dan's life. Nathan tells him to help the guy out if he wants but beware of who he is.

What's up with Dan: Dan tells Keith to fire Nathan. He insists that if he helps Nathan out the kid will never realize what a huge mistake the whole marriage thing is. Keith tells him that Nathan is doing a good job and while he's running things at the dealership he stays.

What's up with Haley: Instead of coming home with a car (Keith said it was no good anyway), Nathan buys Haley a keyboard. He wants to support her and her musical interests. Nathan tells her he sees the music taking her places one day but Haley says that he needs something to take him to work today.

What's up with Lucas: Despite his major reservations Lucas returns to Dan's bedside, asks him if he wants to work out and ends up agreeing to drive him to the dealership in the guy's rockin' Corvette. As Dan and Lucas drive to the dealership Felix pulls up next to him and challenges him to race. Lucas passes but Dan encourages the kid to go for it. Convertible Vette verses the Convertible Beemer. Lucas should know better after his car wreck last season and eventually the guy comes to his senses when Felix plays hard-core chicken with a semi. Felix hops out and when he asks Lucas who he has riding shotgun there's an uncomfortable moment. Lucas almost introduces Dan as his father but he introduces himself as Dan Scott of Dan Scott Motors and just let him know when he'd like to "trade up." Smooth as usual.

What's up with Peyton: The girls think there's something between Brooke and Felix. They shop for a good outfit that will make Peyton look older and legit and that will help her get a backer for her all ages club night idea. Peyton shows the club owner (who looks an awful lot like six time Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong) how much she knows about music. He's impressed. He realizes that she's young but might be worth the risk. Just as Peyton thinks that she's in, the dirty club owner starts chopping lines of cocaine. He offers her one and she tells him "no thanks." And if the scene isn't creepy enough he offers it to her again telling her that "this is her chance." Luckily Peyton has a good head on her shoulders and she quickly decides that drugs are too high a price to pay for her all ages club.

How does it all wrap up: Brooke admits to Peyton that she lied about her financial situation and comes clean with the fact that her father's company went under, they are bankrupt and may have to sell the house. She's devastated. Peyton tells her friend that it's only money-she's still the same person. Not accustomed to being poor, Brooke later attempts to walk out of a store with a bra she saw earlier and liked. When the sales girl tries to stop her Mr. Good Timing Felix comes to the rescue-he buys the bra for her. Brooke runs off, humiliated. Felix catches up to her later and rubs it in. He's amused that the "rich girl" gets caught shoplifting. He promises to keep it between them but gives her the bra telling her that he plans on seeing her in it soon anyway.

Dan and Lucas seem to be hitting it off. But later Dan offers the convertible Vette to Lucas telling him that if he likes the car he can have it. Lucas is offended. He tells his so-called father that he can't buy him and says "Shame on me-I actually enjoyed a day with you…until now." Later when Nathan comes to pick up Dan's car (just on loan from the dealership apparently with the option to buy at cost) the old man is bummed that the kid doesn't want to talk to him. Dan asks him how his wife is and Nathan tells him "A lot happier than yours." Ouch! When he goes back in the house Dan admits to Deb that maybe he's been chasing the wrong things his whole life, respect, money and success. Is it too late for him to change? Probably not, and it's never too late to shave we say!

Later at the dealership Keith and Nathan discuss how much Haley didn't like the keyboard-well she did but she wanted it to have four wheels and a trunk. Keith offers to help Nathan fix up an old beater Honda that he was going to part out anyway-a family project. When Nathan comes home he and Haley discuss how they have to be careful with their money if they want to make their marriage work. He agrees but wants her to keep the keyboard. He tells her about the car and Keith and she's thrilled. Just when Peyton thinks that all hopes are lost for the all ages night club-Karen calls her up. She's ready to expand but needs someone to run the club. She asks Peyton to do it for her. Big plus…no drugs involved in this deal!

I Will Dare
Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Tom Wright October 19, 2004

What's the drama: BrMysterious envelopes arrive in everyone's lockers. Turns out new guy Felix is throwing a little Dare Soiree and for some reason everyone decides to participate. He breaks the gang into two teams, boys versus girls. They all have until Midnight to perform their various tasks. It's all about having fun and testing limits. Felix gives each team a photo/video phone so that once the dare is completed they can send the proof of completion to the other teams.

Karen pays a visit to hunky professor guy at his office. She tells him that it's not appropriate for him to come to the Café for coffee every morning. So instead he invites her to dinner and she accepts. And it looks like Karen ain't the only Tree Hill singleton to get lucky. A gorgeous woman comes in to the dealership, corners Keith and means business. She tells Keith she knows exactly how much the car she wants is and he should take it or leave it. Always the gentleman, Keith offers to allow the gal to test drive the car before she overpays him for it. During their test drive mystery gal admits that she's nervous about test-driving but Keith assures her that he's not a schmarmy car salesman, he's a mechanic-she instantly feels better.

What's up with Lucas: Although he was at first reluctant, Lucas is the first to take a dare envelope and is for some reason the only person to go out on his own. He's to return women's clothing to some stores in the mall (while wearing them). First he returns a woman's shirt because it's not his size but he does have the receipt and all the girls in the shop love the way he looks in his bra. About the same activity occurs with the pants until Luke's almost arrested for indecent exposure. Luckily a hot gal who happens to be shopping in the same store saves our scantily clad hero. Her name turns out to be Anna and she's quite the smarty-she saw him earlier and figured he was out on a dare party. She doesn't want him to get busted for just having a little fun. He owes her one. Anna asks Lucas to pay her back by letting her play for awhile too. So maybe she's not so smart. The happy couple dig change out of a fountain and end up really hitting it off. The next dare is easy-take a photo with a stranger in a photo booth. Oops, the dare actually said make out with a stranger in a photo booth. Heck that was easy. Lucas seems to really like this Anna.

What's up with Mouth: Mouth is paired with Skills and their first dare is to get a hit at the fastest pitch at the batting cages…with their heads. Then it's karaoke and Mouth apparently "Likes Big Butts." The girls go crazy but we're not sure why. Next up…critters. The guys are supposed to steal something wild from the zoo. They originally select something scaly but then decide to steal a turtle. Clearly much easier to catch.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke is teamed up with Felix. She could do her first dare in her sleep. She is dared to get a table at the best restaurant in town without reservations and without waiting. Is this LA or Tree Hill? The friendly host guy denies Brooke immediately, even when she tells him she's Queen Latifa. He's no fool. But it was all a trick. Felix got reservations earlier-the couple sits, presumably for dinner. Brooke orders two of the restaurant's most expensive entrees. But her date is unmoved. Felix excuses himself, presumably to the restroom and instead heads to the Café where he calls Brooke and tells her to dine and dash. Reluctantly Brooke takes the dare and now for sure she won't be back to the best restaurant in town. She can't afford the place anymore anyway. Brooke's next dare is to take a photo of herself in an open grave which is perfect since she plans on killing Felix.

What's up with Nathan: For their very first dare Nathan and Tim arrive at the Happy Ending and ask for "The Special." Always thinking dirty Tim offers to go first and it turns out to be a full body wax. For their next dare the guys have to dress up like little brownie rejects and sell cookies door to door. They even have a prepared speech about being Lady Leprechauns and selling cookies to empower themselves. Tim admits that he thinks Felix is kind of cool and Nathan tells him he wouldn't think that if he had a life of his own and stopped living through him. Tim is hurt by Nathan's remarks. The two end up having a heart to heart and poor Tim wonders if Nathan misses his Timmy Time? Of course. The two old friends make up and things are good until their next dare-- taking a dump at the second hole at the miniature golf course. Nasty!

What's up with Peyton: Peyton and Haley are teamed up. They are forced to eat pickled eggs and get hit in the head with a screaming baseball. For their final dare they are to go to a church where they have to get into the confessional and tell the priest "Lately I've been having impure doubts about my neighbor's dog." Haley backs out for fear of eternal damnation. Peyton goes for it but instead of her script she tells the father that she is in a church for the first time since her mother died. She is afraid that her mother's watching her fall short of who she wanted her daughter to become. Can she see her now? Did she see her do that line of cocaine last week? Yikes! We were sure that Peyton didn't do the drugs that the cheesy club owner offered her. Peyton admits that she doesn't know why she did it. Life is good but she wants great. She figured she's find great in the drugs but she didn't. She knew she did wrong and she wants her mother to know that. The priest tells her that her mother knows she's good peeps. Drugs aside, Peyton's mom is probably just happy she's not crazy running red lights girl anymore.

What's up with Karen: Dinner with Andy the Professor is at a hot dog stand. Um…didn't he say he was filthy rich? While they chat over weenies Karen says that she has a son and is not in her late twenties and finally admits that his class has encouraged her to expand her business. He even wants to invest but she denies him. She does buy him ice cream though. At the end of the evening Andy tells Karen that he thinks she's doing a brave thing-investing in the club. They don't kiss good night but we figure they both think about it.

What's up with Keith: Keith informs the hot woman car shopper that she offered him a grand too much for the car. She continues to flirt with him and tells him that she will sit on the idea for awhile. If she waits a few days he'll have to call her. He has her number. So if we're getting this right…and we think we are…that hot chick wants Keith's bod!

How does it all wrap up: After all their dares are wrapped up Anna departs. Lucas dares her to call him. The group reconvenes and they realize that there is a tie. The tie breaker-kiss a teammate on the mouth. No problem. Brooke pushes Felix out of the way and kisses Peyton. So the girls win. The guys would have won but there was one dare that apparently didn't get accomplished. Lucas was supposed to kiss a stranger in a phone booth and rather than give away his romantic evening and show his photos he tells the gang that he didn't get the job done. As Nathan and Haley head back to the apartment Tim realizes that he's once again the odd man out and starts to get bummed. But Nathan offers him a game of NBA Live. Little Tim is stoked. The boys share a little Timmy Time.

As he walks Brooke home Felix wants her to admit that she had a good time with him. She denies it. She pretends to be uninterested but still wants to know how the psychic Felix reads her and he admits that he needs to read her more. He wants to be friends…with benefits. She tells him she'll think about it. When Felix gets home he asks his little sister how her evening at the mall went-it's Anna. She is surprised. She figured Felix would have known about her little photo shoot in the booth but realizes that Lucas must have kept their little secret. He likes her, he really likes her!

We Might As Well Be Strangers
Written by Terrence Coli Directed by Sandy Bookstaver October 26, 2004

What's the drama: Dan has finally shaved and he is even passing the intense stress test he's given at the doctor's office. The guy seems to be recovering and even worked up enough to ask Deb to join him at the beach house to watch the meteor shower that evening. Dinner included. He wants to thank her for all the help she's given him during his recovery.

Peyton and Haley are auditioning bands for the new all ages night at the club. Peyton is posting flyers around town announcing the audition and asks the cute "Punk" record store proprietor for a little help. He's rude to her and there's definite chemistry between the two. Keith calls Jules (last week's test driving diva) with a supposed follow up customer satisfaction survey. She sees through his act but tells him she might consider giving him a good grade if he comes and makes dinner for her and he agrees to do so. Now that's service.

Lucas pays a visit to Whitey at his office in the school gym. The kid tells the old fella that he thinks he should go ahead and have the surgery he needs. Whitey asks Lucas if he knows how is wife died…in surgery, just like so many other unlucky people do every year. Whitey tells Lucas to get out and mind his own business, not necessarily in that order. Later Luke finds Whitey again and tells him that the kids need him-not just to win games but they need him in their lives. He insists that Whitey get the surgery. Nathan wants Haley to audition for Payton's all ages night but she balks-it's one thing to sing for him at home but she's totally not going to perform for real people! And Nathan is accepted to a rockin' basketball camp "High Flyers," in Florida a once in a lifetime opportunity. A couple of catches though-it's three months long and he is not anxious to leave his wife for that long.

Professor Andy invites Karen to come watch the meteor shower with him in his backyard. She's anxious about dating her professor but Andy explains that he wouldn't do anything to jeopardize his job or her education. She decides to go. And, Brooke is moping. She's bummed that she is now poor and horny. Worst of all, she's nervous that if her parents go broke she'll have to study in order to get into college. She gives in the "friends with benefits" gig with Felix, but no talking, no spooning and definitely no PDA.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas gets called out of science class. It's Anna. She apologizes about not getting back to him after dare night and it comes out that Felix is her brother, and that Lucas never gave him the pictures of them. The night they shared wasn't just about a dare for him. The next day the couple plays basketball for information about one another. They have so much fun that they also decide to hang out and catch the meteor shower together. She fesses up that Felix does not know that she is there with him. Lucas tells her all about his whole crazy past year and lets her know that his days of sneaking around are over. If they want to hang out she's got to talk to Felix.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan is nervous about going to the dream basketball camp for three whole months. He's nervous that he and Haley won't be able to afford it without his income and besides he's nervous to leave her for that long. Haley tells her husband that he's going to that camp if she has to sell a kidney.

What's up with Keith: Keith makes dinner for his new gal pal. He brings wine but she turns out to be more of a beer kind of gal. Lucky for him after he burns the grub, she's a take out kind of gal too. They end up spending the evening together, getting to know one another and making out in her favorite car at Dan's dealership.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke's family is selling everything in a loss of pride yard sale right in front of their mansion. At a very low point a nice lady buys Brooke's dollhouse for $450. Felix sure knows how to come around at the girl's weak times. He shows up just as Brooke snaps up the dollhouse check and she agrees to meet him in twenty minutes up in her room. They hook up and afterward Brooke accidentally starts confiding in frisky Felix. When she realizes what she's done she gives him the boot.

What's up with Dan: Deb agrees to watch the meteor shower and share dinner with Dan down at the beach house. Somehow he's very knowledgeable about the stars and the folklore and he's quite the date. Deb is probably just happy that the guy finally shaved! When it gets late Dan suggests that Deb stay the night there with him-he packed her bag earlier just in case. And if need be he'll take the couch. She stays but it's not clear where she ended up sleeping.

What's up with Karen: Andy takes Karen to his backyard in order to watch the meteor shower. It turns out that his backyard is the community park and he has a lovely romantic lakeside dinner for two. Teacher and student share a very romantic evening and it even comes out that Andy was raised by a single mum. He would have loved to see his mother live her own life the way Karen is going for it. When Karen gets home late that evening she discovers Lucas waiting up for her. He wanted to make sure that she had a good time. She did.

What's up with Peyton: Pickins are slim at club no-name. Everyone who auditions blows so much that Peyton and Haley consider not opening at all. As they talk Peyton accidentally gets a listen to Haley's song on the MP3 player and when Peyton urges her to play on opening night she tells her she's too crippled by stage fright to even consider playing in front of an audience. Just then rude record store guy barges in and nails an audition. Much to her chagrin, Peyton just found her opening night man.

What's up with Haley: Nathan tells his wife that he didn't get in the camp after all, they made a mistake and another kid got in instead of him. Now she can concentrate on her singing. Does she really believe that he didn't get into the camp?

How does it all wrap up: Lucas drops off Anna at home after their nice romantic evening and Felix catches the couple just as they share a goodnight kiss. Felix no likey so much. When Anna comes in the house he confronts her about kissing Lucas. Felix attempts to discredit Lucas (people in glass houses and all) but Anna is willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. The next morning Deb is prepared to leave the beach house. She realizes that Dan has recovered and doesn't need her--he is ready to move on. He gets a call from his doctor as they discuss their future. Doc tells Dan that he's looking good but Dan tells his wife that the news is bad-he'll have to return to her home for awhile. She believes him.

Haley may not see through Nathan's lie about not getting into the camp but Lucas does. He knows that Nathan really got in and calls his brother on it. Nathan tells Luke that he wants Haley to take the time to make music. If he leaves for three months she won't do it. He's putting her first. When Dan gets wind about Nathan not going to the camp he's peeved. The camp director tells Dan that even though he guaranteed Nathan getting in the kid doesn't want to be away from his wife.

As Peyton gets the building ready for the big opening night her sign that is supposed to say Electric turns out to be broken and "TRIC" is the only part that lights up. Peyton has her club's name. Just as she revels in her new discovery the smarmy club owner slinks in and announces that they will be working together after all…and partying together too eh? Peyton looks uncomfortable with the very thought. Just as things seem to be hitting rock bottom for Brooke, Mouth arrives at her door and announces that he's bought back her dollhouse. Now why does the girl want to spend any time with Felix when nice guys like Mouth are around? And finally it seems that Lucas' nagging has paid off. Whitey decides to get the surgery and as he checks himself into the hospital Lucas opens a thank you note from his coach.

Let the Reigns Go Loose
Written by R. Lee Fleming, Jr. Directed by David Paymer November 2, 2004

What's the drama: If Peyton wants Cranky Record Store Owner Chris to play the opening night show she needs to ask nicely and suck up royally. He gives her the list of his requests including a box of condoms. She's disgusted but tells him he goes on at nine. Haley just wants to avoid public humiliation as she prepares to open up for the guy on the big opening night. Brooke is doing charity work (aside from Felix). The girl is ripping off her fellow students by raising money for the "needy." Sadly the needy is Brooke. She needs something new for the club opening and can't afford it. Haley and Peyton try to tell her to get a job but she has no skills…except guys.

Anna tells Lucas that they need to slow down a bit. She just wants to hang out. Friends with potential (what's up with that family and qualifying friendships?). Lucas is good with that though. Dan pays a visit to Karen at the Café. He wants to apologize (for everything he's ever done) again. Karen tells him that no one is buying his rebirth thing and frankly he's just creeping everyone out as he apologizes all around town. This clearly stings because Dan then asks Karen why Keith hasn't been coming to the Café lately. He tells her he hopes it isn't because Keith slept with Deb. Ouch! Yeah, this was news to Karen. So much for the reborn nice guy Daniel Scott. Meanwhile, Keith asks Jules to the big opening night and Jules busts out "The Rules" rule about not accepting a date for the weekend when the guy asks after Wednesday. She'll make an acceptation this time.

What's up with Keith: For some reason Keith feels the need to tell Karen that he will be bringing a date to the club opening. Karen is okay with the whole thing. But she wonders if he has anything else to tell her. He doesn't because of course he has no idea that Dan spilled the beans about him sleeping with Deb.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke thinks Felix is getting a little "needy" lately. She clarifies the rules of their "Friends with Benefits" situation. He sticks it to her with the fact that he will be bringing a date to the club opening. What! Brooke ends up selling her blood in order to shop for a new outfit at the discount store. She's mortified and kind of freaking at her poorness. Lucky she has enough money left over to stop by at the liquor store for some booze.

What's up with Haley: She's overwhelmed with stage fright-simply too many people in the hiz-house. She informs Peyton that she will not be able to get it together to perform. But her name is already on the poster and people are there to see her play. Peyton is disappointed.

What's up with Peyton: The entire town turns out for the opening night of TRIC. But Peyton is a pro. She handles herself like she's done it all before. It's a night she's decided to call "House of Freaks." And speaking of freaks, when she announces her one and only act Chris Keller…he kind of freaks. The audience is inattentive and he tells them that they "are not ready for this" and storms off stage. He won't play for a bunch of mall rats who don't appreciate him. It's not what Chris Keller is about." He refers to himself in the third person, which is also very annoying.

What's up with Lucas: "Friends with Potential" are allowed to dance. As Lucas and Anna work it on out on the dance floor Felix arrives to work out some brotherly frustrations. He's somehow gotten his hands on the photos of Anna and Lucas in the photo booth. And he's pissed. The siblings take it outside and he scolds her for doing exactly what she did in the last town they lived. Apparently they had to move because of it as well. But Anna reminds him that those were just rumors.

What's up with Felix: Brooke drowns her sorrows with booze at the back of the club but she eventually brings it inside, stealing from the bar. Nice. She's glum about Felix being there with another gal and when Mouth arrives, clearly totally in love with her, she tells him he's like a great little brother. Exactly what he wanted to hear. Not. After his sad conversation with Brooke, Mouth confronts Felix about being cruel to her. Mouth wonders why he bothered to buy Brooke's dollhouse back for her if he was just going to be mean to her now. Felix tells the guy to mind his own business (apparently he has a plan) but Mouth is persistent. When Lucas sees the two arguing he takes the opportunity to confront Felix. Words are exchanged and Lucas tells the guy he's lucky because he won't fight in the club. But Felix has no problem with the brawl. And the boys come to blows. Felix is tossed out.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan visits Whitey in the hospital. Nathan tells his coach about how he sacrificed going to the killer basketball camp. Whitey tells him that his not taking a step forward as a basketball player helped him take two steps forward as a man. So we are to suppose that Whitey had his surgery and all is well? Time will certainly tell.

How does it all wrap up: When Chris Keller refuses to perform the crowd is royally disappointed. Haley steps up despite her fear and plays instead, bringing down the house. She's a huge hit. Lucas gets grounded for a week for brawling in his mom's club. But it looks like he's won the girl again. After Lucas heads home Andy asks Karen why she didn't tell him that her son was a teenager, letting him think he was just a little kid. Karen admits that she's nervous about their age difference but he's not. She doesn't think they look right but Andy thinks it's more important for it to FEEL right. The rest doesn't matter. Hello hottie! What a guy! Looks like Karen has found herself a nice (and loaded) fella!

Massive kudos are passed around for Haley after her fantastic performance and Cranky Chris tells her that he wants to work together-he has some studio time. Turns out he bowed out and was publicly humiliated so she would go on. Sure. We might buy that. Nathan is incredibly proud as Haley rushes off for an interview with Thud Magazine. But Chris blows the moment by adding…"Do you have any idea how many guys in the room want to nail your wife right now?" Welp, the room is empty except the two of them but we get the idea.

Mouth brings Brooke home in a drunken stupor. He tucks her in and makes sure she's safe and whispers to her passed out self that he loves her. But Felix talks Mouth into leaving her with him. Mouth may be timid but he confronts Felix telling him that he doesn't deserve a girl like Brooke. According to Mouth, "Guys like me don't get girls like her and guys like you don't care." Sadly…it's true. Mouth leaves and suddenly Brooke wakes up, seeing Felix there and assumes that he took care of her pathetic inebriated booty all evening. She's impressed and he tells her that sometimes you just have to break the rules. This guy is no friend and there's no benefit to having him around.

At the end of the night Karen and Deb chat about the success of the opening night of the club. Karen throws caution aside and gets it out in the open by asking Deb if she slept with Keith. After a terrible uncomfortable second Deb lies to her friend and tells her that she did not. Keith takes his new girlfriend Jules home and they decide to be "exclusive." She invites him in for the evening. Way to bounce back Keith! Bet he's glad he decided to move back to Tree Hill! Nathan waits up for Haley who isn't home before 3:00 AM. Just as Peyton and Haley are ready to lock up for the evening Peyton tells her that she's got to get rid of some stragglers. It's the smarmy club owner doing drugs in the back with some other losers. Smarmy club owner tells the other creeps that it's cool, he and Peyton did lines together just a couple of nights ago.

Truth, Bitter Truth
Written by Stacy Rukeyser Directed by Billy Dickson November 9, 2004

What's the drama: NBA expansion team means quality floor tix for Nathan and Lucas. Nathan surprises his brother with tickets to the Bobcat's game in Charlotte, which means road trip! And while the boys are away the girls will play. Brooke talks Haley into having a slumber party at her apartment. Brooke swears that it's "just girls," but we don't believe her. The sneaky gal even offers to come over early and "set up." Meanwhile, Brooke is so poor that her folks sell her bed out from under her (and Felix) and she is forced to sell her CDs to cranky Chris. Lucky for Keith he still has his bed as he and Jules put it to good use and the lady even ends up going out to get breakfast the next morning. Never mind that she has to jimmy the lock to get back in. The chocolate croissants are worth it. After opening night at TRIC Haley told Karen about Peyton doing drugs. So Karen holds her own version of a one-woman intervention. She tells Peyton that she understands that the drug dude Rick has a lot of music connections and is very influential but she WILL NOT have drugs in her club. Karen also offers her help but it's clear that Peyton is too uncomfortable to really focus. However, she does promise to let her know if anything like that ever happens again. Her demeanor seems less than confident. Karen calls Rick in and tells him to stay away from her club and her patrons. He threatens to take away her business and promises that she won't be able to book any music acts if she gets on his bad side. She tells him she's not worried.

What's up with Lucas: As the boy's road trip their way to the Bobcat's game they realize that it sucks to be poor. Nathan's sound system is sucky but he's proud that his beater mobile has nothing to do with Dan.

What's up with Karen: Karen turns her first college paper in to Professor Andy who promptly invites her to dinner at a favorite Tree Hill restaurant. It's a small town but guess who arrives just as they do? Keith and Jules. Jules takes an uncomfortable situation and makes the best of it by buying the first round. The ice is officially broken. The dinner turns out not being too difficult and Karen heads back to Andy's house for a night cap. She's exhausted from pulling the all-nighter with the paper and she's a little apprehensive about her grade. He tries to put her at ease and gives her an automatic A…without even reading the paper. She's perplexed because she worked so hard on it.

What's up with Peyton: When Peyton and Anna arrive at Haley's apartment all ready to party and maybe even slumber a bit eventually, they arrive to a very dark place. After a little detecting they stumble upon Brooke and Felix frolicking in Haley and Nathan's bed. Brooke's explanation is that "they were horny." Not exactly the best way for Brooke to be introduced to Felix's little sis. Anna is disgusted. Felix refuses to leave and takes a marathon shower while the girls try to figure out what to do with the guy before Haley gets home.

What's up with Haley: At the recording session Haley is shy and holds back a bit. Chris tells her that she has the talent but for some reason she "won't go there." He guides her through the song and it becomes a duet. Haley ends up opening up and the song sounds great! When Haley finally arrives at the slumber party the cat fight begins. She is grossed out that Brooke and Felix had the sex in her bed and Brooke throws out the fact that Haley isn't close to perfect because she straight-out lied to Nathan and didn't tell him that she was recording with Chris. When Peyton attempts to jump in and separate the two they pull her in. Haley tells her, "If we are talking about bad behavior maybe you should sit this one out." She even makes references to "snorting" and such. The three continue to throw verbal daggers as Anna sits by amused. There's clearly drama in Tree Hill, which pleases her greatly.

What's up with Keith: Keith can't believe his luck. Jules seems so very perfect even if he knows very little about her aside from the fact that she can break and enter his home with no worries.

What's up with Nathan: After the game Nathan opens up to Lucas. The trip wasn't just about seeing the game. He has something else on his mind. Dan's heart condition is a genetic mutation, which means they may have it too. In fact here's a 50-50 chance that they could have it, meaning one of them probably does. That also means that basketball is out…forever. Nathan wants to get tested in Charlotte even though the tests are very expensive. He's made appointments for them both for the next morning.

What's up with Brooke: The girls sit around licking their wounds and the apologies eventually begin. Brooke calls a cease fire. Haley explains why she didn't tell Nathan about her recording session. She just wanted something for herself for once. The conversation turns to Peyton who tells them that she is not going to do cocaine again. She's not terribly convincing. Haley admits that she should have talked about the drugs with her before she went running to Karen. She didn't know how to handle the situation. They all decide that they will talk about things-even if it is ugly…especially if it's ugly. When the talk turns to Brooke, Peyton tells her that she shouldn't be having sex with a guy who won't even respect her enough to have a real relationship with her. This is less than her. Brooke tells them that it's just about sex but they all agree that sex isn't just sex and they all know it. When the sob fest ends the requisite pillow fight begins. Feathers fly again but this time it's all in fun.

How does it all wrap up: After the game the guys run into Number 50, Bobcat rookie Emeka Okafor. They ask him how he likes playing pro ball and he tells them it's been his dream his whole life. And they need to bulk up if they want to play in the NBA. They both wonder what it would be like to not be able to follow their dreams because of illness. Nathan tells Lucas that he owes it to Haley to find out but Lucas doesn't want to know. He decides not to take the test. After Luke's accident he told himself that he wouldn't be afraid of dying or living. But he is afraid of what his mom will think. If Karen asks, he took the test, and he's fine. When Nathan gets the results back he discovers that he is fine which doesn't work well mathematically for Lucas.

Keith and Jules head home after dinner and reflect on the evening while they scarf strawberry ice cream and Coco Pebbles. The next morning she breaks in again with morning treats and ever the romantic, Keith gives her a key. It's a big step but they both seem comfortable with it. After Karen's quick departure Andy shows up at her doorstep. She explains that she's freaked out that he didn't even read her paper and he gave her an A…in his bedroom. He assures Karen that her paper is good and her two successful businesses are proof of that. He also tells her that she needs more confidence in herself, and in him. He offers to have a colleague grade her paper for him if it will make her feel better about the situation. It must be a great idea because they make up and hop directly into bed.

The next morning Haley wakes up with a sugar hangover and Brooke gives her a little hair of the dog (ice cream) for breakfast. Anna tells Peyton that she is happy that she has found some friends she can be happy and comfortable with. Even Brooke ends up pleased with their new relationship. When Peyton gets home she is dismayed that she has a message from Creepy Rick. He asks her to call him. She looks confused. Anna gets home from the slumber party and lays into Felix. He does this manipulating thing where ever they go, but she likes these people and she likes Brooke. Felix tells his sister that he really likes Brooke too. He really likes her. But it's against the rules and he doesn't know what to do.

The Trick is to Keep Breathing
Written by James Stoteraux and Chad Fiveash Directed by John Asher November 16, 2004

What's the drama: Haley really wants to go the One Tree formal but Nathan isn't into it-his folks are going to be chaperones. Naturally he's just pretending because the best husband ever is planning a romantic evening that will knock his wife's socks off. But it's a surprise! For once Brooke is unable to afford a dress for the formal so Peyton buys it for her. Mums the word on where she got the cash. Brooke and Peyton are officially going as dates because going with Felix would be against the rules, even though he's been sweet lately. Anna isn't a game to Lucas, which is what he tells Felix when he announces that he plans on taking his sister to the ball. Felix reluctantly gives his blessing. Dan does sit ups and push ups to get back in shape but stops the minute Deb comes in the room. He's busy keeping up with the charade. She's reluctant about chaperoning the dance because Karen is helping out as well. What if she finds out the truth about her and Keith? Deb is concerned but Dan pretends that he figured she already told Karen since they're so tight now. Yeah right…not that tight.

Dan's doctor calls Lucas to urge him to get the test on his heart and the kid tells the good doctor that he would rather live a short happy life than a life of paranoia and fear. But the doctor explains that knowledge will help him live a quality life…the way his father is. When Lucas points out the fact that Dan is still wallowing in illness the doctor fills him in on the fact that Dan has had a clean bill of health for weeks now. The gig is up Danny! Meanwhile, dirty cokehead club owner guy stops by to see Peyton to complain about his run in with Karen but still leaves her "a little something" in a vile. Peyton is tempted.

What's up with Haley: Peyton asks Haley to do an entire set at the club. She's reluctant since she doesn't have a full set prepared but Chris jumps in and offers to play with her. But they'll need to practice that night…the night of the formal. She agrees! When she tells Nathan about the rehearsal he agrees to let her go on the condition that she is just a little late. Little does she know that he has a full evening of fun planned. Chris tells Haley that if she has a great demo he can get the record labels to come to TRIC when she performs. The night of the dance the rehearsal runs long. Haley calls Nathan to let him know she'll be even later than originally thought. He dismisses the horse drawn carriage and the romance.

What's up with Anna: Since it's her first real formal Anna gets ready with Peyton and Brooke. As they preen she asks about Peyton's drawing of Jake and Jenny and Peyton tells her that he's left town and they don't talk anymore.

What's up with Felix: Felix and Mouth go to the formal together but enter the building five minutes apart. So very J Lo and Mark Anthony! But Mouth gets the first dance with Brooke and as they dance she tells Mouth all about how Felix took care of her while she was drunk. When Mouth confronts Felix about that little lie he tells him that it's because he has real feelings for the girl.

What's up with Lucas: At the formal Dan confronts Lucas about not getting the test but Lucas tells him that it's better than lying about the results. He knows the truth and you don't lie to people you love. Dan explains that he is doing so in order to get his family back together. But he turns the table on Lucas pointing out the fact that he's not telling Karen the truth. What's up with that? For once Dan seems to be on the right side of an argument. But surprisingly, Lucas' secret is safe with Dan…for now. Dan tells his son that he's not planning on telling Karen because he's forcing Lucas to tell her himself.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke likes Anna well enough but she confesses to Mouth that she is a little annoyed that she just got her best friend back and now she has a third wheel to deal with. Later, for some reason, while at the formal Mouth decides to tell Brooke the truth about Felix buying back the dollhouse and the fact that he was the one who actually held her hair while she was drunk. Not sure what kind of reaction he expected but Brooke immediately gets cranky about the fact that Mouth lied to her and then congratulates him for being like "every other guy" now.

What's up with Nathan: Tim talks Nathan into throwing a hedonistic after party at his parent's beach house. Since Haley is tardy Nathan asks his mom if she'll dance the first dance with him. Unfortunately it's not to be kind, it's so that Tim can rifle through Deb's purse and locate the beach house key. Meanwhile Chris unplugged the clock in the recording studio and Haley loses track of time. She arrives just in time for the announcement that she and Nathan are "Tree Hill King Queen." In an effort to make the evening super memorable Nathan arranged to have Haley's song playing as they receive their crowns. It's all good until Chris' voice chimes in. Nathan is outraged.

What's up with Peyton: When Anna needs to borrow some lipstick from Peyton she digs into her purse to look for it and instead finds her little gift from the Cokehead. When chaperone Karen spots Peyton coming out of the bathroom stall all freaked she asks her if she's okay but Peyton clearly has something to hide. The girl is also very emotional as she is wearing her mother's very same dress that she wore to the Tree Hill Formal. Karen tells her that she never had a daughter (duh), but if she did she'd like her to be just like her. Umm…did she forget the "don't do drugs in my club again" conversation they just had a couple of days ago?

What's up with Dan: After they get home from the dance Dan leaves for the beach house, telling Deb that he lied to her about the stress test. He wanted to get their family back together so badly that he lied. She tells him that she wants the family back together again too but won't tolerate lies. He promises no more. He doesn't leave that night.

How does it all wrap up: Nathan confronts Haley on her feelings about Chris and when he asks her if she's "into him," she's upset that he even asked her that. So is he. Haley tells Nathan that she believes that he feels bad because she is doing so well and he isn't after not getting into High Flyers. He tells her that she should check out the letter in the top drawer of his dresser-the one that congratulates him for getting into the camp. So much for being jealous. Guess he just cares about his wife.

At the after party someone carelessly spills a drink on Peyton's dress. She freaks and tries scrubbing out the stain. When it doesn't seem to work she grabs the coke and furiously attempts to cut lines on a CD. She gets a look at her pathetic reflection and angrily throws it all against the wall. After the dance Anna is ready to jump into bed with Lucas but ever the good guy, he tells her that after what happened last time he promised himself that he'd be in love the next time he did that. She's left feeling like an idiot…and a little embarrassed. He tries to reassure her but she is inconsolable and leaves for home.

Felix gets all happy about ending his evening with Brooke but she confronts him about lying to her. She was lied to before and it won't happen again. Felix tries to explain his feelings but Brooke tells him that he doesn't get to have her body or her heart because they are done. Later when Anna attempts to talk to Peyton about the drugs in her purse she tells her she flushed it. She's just done it the one time. Anna tells her about her humiliating evening with Lucas and they decide to have a bummed gal slumber party.

Meanwhile, Brooke broods on the beach and Lucas finds her. She asks why guys always lie. She feels gullible. He assures her that she is smarter than most, she knows who she is-most people don't yet. Lucas offers to drive the lady home and even buys her breakfast. They decide to be friends…with no benefits. Felix spots Lucas dropping Brooke off as the sun comes up and gets the wrong idea in so many ways.

Don't Take Me For Granted
Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Lev L. Shapiro November 30, 2004

What's the drama: It's the morning after the big dance, and for some reason, everyone is headed to school. Nathan stays the night at Lucas' house after he and Haley fight and he split. Lucas encourages his brother to work it out with the girl -- it's worth it. Nathan heads home and asks his wife to stop working with Chris. But she tells him that Chris is incredibly talented and she refuses.

Brooke wakes up to disaster. Her windshield has been bashed in by some hideous vandal. Hmmm…wonder who could have done that? She figures it's Felix, and she comes to Lucas for a ride to school. Being the good guy, of course he agrees.

Felix confronts Anna after she returns from being out all night, but she explains that she stayed the night with Peyton. Then Felix confronts Mouth and confesses that whatever crap you pull catches up to you. Then he breaks the news that Brooke dumped him and it took her all of five minutes to run to Lucas.

And DYKE is graffitied across Peyton's locker when she arrives at school. Brooke tells her friend that the vandal did her a favor -- boys love lesbians and besides, the old Peyton would have "just rolled with this." Peyton finds it really hard to roll with the situation when she is ogled at all day and even her new friend Anna gives her the public cold shoulder.

Keith begins to doubt the idea of moving back to Charleston and teaching when Dan offers him a VP management position at the dealership. Jules tells Keith he should go follow his heart, but part of what initially attracted her to him was his passion for the teaching job he left behind in Charleston.

What's up with Peyton: When Peyton has had enough of the ridicule at school, she cuts out at lunch. Lucas pays her a visit to make sure she's okay. He asks her if she knows who did it, and she has no idea. While in her room, Lucas finds Peyton's drawing of Jake and Jenny. When he asks her about it she tells him that he's not qualified as a friend to ask about that--if he were a real friend he would know all the crap she's been dealing with lately.

Later, Anna comes over to Peyton's house apologizing about blowing her off at lunch that day. She tells her that at her last school there were similar rumors about her and another girl. Her parents had to leave town because of those rumors--even though they weren't true. When Anna saw her locker she freaked. Peyton isn't so freaked about what "they" did to her but what kind of hate "they" brought to their school. Instead of cowering in fear, the next day Peyton wears a t-shirt with DYKE across the chest. Mr. Turner tells her to remove her shirt or face suspension, so she takes off her shirt. As Peyton struts away in her red bra, Mr. Turner tells her to enjoy her suspension.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas is busted when somehow his mother finds out that he didn't bother to take the genetic heart test the way Nathan did. She's pissed that her son puts basketball before his health. When he refuses to take the test, she tells him that her parental permission to play basketball ends until he takes the test. Luke immediately heads to the basketball court down by the river -- but Karen already got to the guys. They refuse to play basketball with him if it could kill him. Lucas immediately confronts Dan. Dan doesn't deny telling Karen, but he does tell Lucas that when his heart failed his life didn't flash before his eyes -- he saw him.

What's up with Keith: Keith ends up accepting Dan's offer. He tells Jules that Charleston was about hope for him, but she has given her hope right there in Tree Hill.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan pays a visit to Chris to tell him that his days of working with his wife are over. Chris tells him that he should trust his wife. But Nathan's violent tendencies return, and he tells the musician to be careful, saying, "I used to destroy guys like you…daily."

When Nathan finally comes home, he is confronted by a very subdued Haley who tells him that she wants to do what it takes to make their marriage work.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke gives Felix an estimate for her windshield (clearly from an all-night body shop). She's certain that he did the deed after she took away his "benefits."

What's up with Haley: Haley heads to the recording studio, but ends up chickening out and leaves before Chris spots her.

What's up with Felix: Felix drops off an envelope at Brooke's house -- along with cash and a photo of him with his ex-girlfriend. He explains how he had his heart broken by the other girl and just attempted the "friends with benefits" thing in order to keep him from getting hurt again.

How it all wraps up: When Mouth finds out that Lucas fixed Brooke's broken windshield, he offers to pay for it. He admits that he did it. Lucas hopes Mouth has an evil twin--he's a nice guy; that's why he has so many friends. But he has no girlfriend. He's sick of being the nice guy and finishing last. Plus, he got drunk. He rode his bike to Brooke's house and the next morning he felt terrible about the whole thing. He still has feelings for Brooke. He plans to tell her the truth…again.

Lucas tells Nathan that he's pissed at Dan for telling his mother about the test (or lack there of). Nathan admits that he told Karen about the test. When Lucas gets mad, Skills backs up Nathan--they want him around. Take the test already. Later, somehow Nathan equates Lucas' potential heart trouble with his heart yearning for a girl, and until he speaks to that girl he won't be okay.

When things totally break down, Peyton runs to her best gal Brooke. Her life is in shambles, and she feels like she is totally alone. She misses her mom and Jake and Jenny. Brooke comforts her friend, but the timing is bad -- Felix comes walking in from the bathroom without his shirt. Peyton is alone again. But when Anna comes over to tell her that she was inspired by what she did at school that day, Peyton tells her she blew her off when she needed her -- so thanks but no thanks.

When Haley finally gets the courage to talk to Chris, she tells him that she won't be able to work with him anymore. It's all for the best, since he just got a gig with a label. He kisses her and asks her to come with him to NYC. She owes it to herself.

As long as everything is out in the open and all the lies are being revealed, Deb comes over to tell Karen the truth. She did have sex with Keith…and lied to her about it.

Keith tells Jules that he loves her…over the phone. She listens to the voicemail and turns to Dan, who says, "Nice work, Jules -- just as we planned."

As Chris waits to depart for NYC, Haley walks up. She was on her way home to Nathan, but she had to come see him first. Chris asks her if she is ready to get on board and head to the big city with him. She doesn't answer.

Peyton finds the smarmy club owner guy and just as she attempts to buy cocaine from him, Jake appears and asks, "Do you know this guy?" Hurrah! Our hero has returned!

And finally, Felix tells Brooke that he has real feelings for her and he never once took her for granted. At the same time, Lucas tells Anna that he cares about her but can't be with her because he still has feelings for someone from his past. He needs to be with that girl. As Lucas walks up to Brooke's room he spots her kissing Felix and ends up not going in.

The Heart Brings You Back Again
Written by Mark B. Perry Directed by Matt Shakman January 25, 2005

What's the drama: We pick up where we left off back in November. Haley tells Chris she "can't do this," meaning New York is out. He splits on the bus but not before they are spotted smooching by someone else. Lucas heads over to Brooke's house to tell her he loves her just as she and Felix kiss and decide to become serious. Talk about bad timing. The next day at school, Anna lets Lucas have it for breaking up with her. She thought he was a nice guy, but his reputation precedes him. Once again, Lucas finds himself on the wrong end of a scorned woman.

Meanwhile, Jake arrives back in Tree Hill just in time to interrupt what was to be a drug deal and sends Peyton's undesirable dealer buddy packing. Peyton is thrilled to see her buddy Jake. It seems Lucas was so worried about her that he called Jake's cousins in Savannah to see if he could come to the rescue. He explains that he hasn't bothered to answer any of Peyton's emails because he…(lame excuse alert!) was afraid that Nikki would find him. What? Does Nikki have some kind of connection to the Homeland Security Department? Peyton explains that he has nothing to fear as she and Brooke sent the girl on a wild goose chase to Seattle.

And there's even more drama with Nathan and Haley. "Hurricane Taylor," Haley's sister, blows into town, which perturbs Haley to no end. Nathan invites Taylor to stay with them which angers his wife even more as they have vowed to work on their marriage.

Karen goes to call Andy while he is on vacation and a female answers his phone. The mystery female tells Karen that he is in the shower. Karen is bummed and perplexed and just as she hangs up, Deb arrives and asks if they can't just get over the whole Keith thing. Karen tells her ex-friend that her sleeping with Keith was a mistake but lying to her about it was a choice and she can't take that from a friend or a business partner. Lucas is freaked when he sees Jules receive a call from the dreaded Dan Scott and decides he needs to get to the bottom of her relationship with the evil man.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas heads over to Jules' place for a chat. He wants to know how she knows Dan Scott. Jules tells her that Dan had some questions about her credit as she bought a car from him and all. Lucas feels stupid, telling her that he was looking out for Keith but now he'd just like her to forget he came by. Later, when Lucas attempts to play a little round ball with Nathan down by the river Nathan refuses. He tells his brother that he won't play with him until he gets the HCM test. Lucas reveals that he is getting the test after all. Nathan does his own revealing and tells Lucas that he is uncomfortable with his sister-in-law visiting as she was the first person he ever had the sex with. If Haley ever finds out she'll flip…to say the least.

What's up with Peyton: Peyton is relishing Jake's visit, but she's bummed that he's only staying for a few days, and he didn't bring his daughter, Jenny. Anna comes to see Peyton to apologize to her for not standing by her when she needed her. She ends up confiding in her about how she and Lucas broke up. When Peyton assures Anna that she is great, Anna goes to hug her and ends up planting a giant smackeroo right on Peyton's lips. Peyton tries to play it cool but Anna freaks and runs out. Peyton follows Anna home and tells her not to be afraid to be who she is. She wants to be sure that they can still be friends, but Anna is not so sure if they can.

What's up with Brooke: Felix has set out to be the perfect boyfriend to Brooke. He showers her with lovely necklaces and takes her to nice dinners. She decides that she doesn't want any of his gifts since her mother married her father for his money and everyone can see how badly that turned out. She returns the necklace and he's okay with that. She breaks up with his money, not with him. Felix invites his new and improved girlfriend Brooke to stay the night…just to cuddle.

What's up with Nathan: Taylor is overly sexual and just a little too comfortable with her sister's new husband. She openly flirts with her brother-in-law and makes him kind of uneasy. After the two enjoy a run at the beach Nathan invites sis-in-law back to his father's beach house, starts a fire and they have cocktails. We'll file that one under "What Were You Thinking?" Taylor tells Nathan that she remembers their drunken escapade a few years back and also admits that she dropped out of school because she got caught cheating on a test and then her professor got caught cheating on his wife with her. Nice girl. They agree to keep each other's secrets.

What's up with Felix: Felix is angry that Anna is hurting over her breakup with Lucas. Playing the bullying big brother, he heads over to the basketball court and picks a fight with Lucas. Naturally, Felix fights dirty. Lucas ends up knocking his head on a bench and finally ends up on the ground where Felix kicks him while he is down.

What's up with Haley: Haley wants to know why Nathan is spending so much time with Taylor. She isn't threatened by her, but she doesn't trust her either. Maybe if big sis wore more clothing around the house…

What's up with Karen: When Andy returns from his vacation in New York, he pays a visit to Karen at the Café. He's confused about why she hasn't been returning his calls. Karen tells him about the mystery woman she spoke to on the phone. As Andy attempts to explain himself, Karen dismisses him. She's tired of being lied to... so buh-bye brother. It's back to a student/teacher relationship for them.

What's up with Anna: Anna pays a visit to Lucas to apologize to him for Felix kicking his ass. She retells the story about the rumors that drove their family from their last town and about how Felix got so mad at her. She tells Lucas that the rumors were really true -- nand the rumors were that she liked girls. Lucas is the first person she has told. She asks him to keep her secret and she promises to keep his secret. She sees that he is still in love with Brooke. Gosh, and he thought he was playing it so cool.

How does it all wrap up: Jake confesses to Peyton that he's not so happy away from Tree Hill and he's worried about her. He knows he broke up a drug deal and she tells him that she made a mistake -- she won't be doing that anymore. Later that night Peyton tells Jake that he doesn't have to worry about her. But he wants to. Later Jake gives Peyton a piece of paper that he carries around in his pocket. It makes him strong. It's the first email she sent him. He tells his friend that he is tired of running. He asks her to come with him to go get Jenny so they can move home. Peyton is stoked like a yuletide log.

Lucas heads back to Jules' house to confront her after he discovers that she paid cash for her car and there was no credit check by Dan. Jules gives him a sob story about how she was over $100,000 dollars in debt after being beaten by her ex-boyfriend. She was so desperate that she posted a message on a website about how she would do anything legal for money. Sure enough, Dan hired her to make Keith fall in love with her and then break his heart. She pleads with Lucas about how he must understand that she has fallen in love with Keith.

Before Professor Andy begins his lecture on "Managerial Ethics," he admits to his class that he has a dirty past. Three years ago when he was driving along in his SUV, wheeling and dealing on a phone, he struck a woman. She survived but has the scars from the accident to remember him by. Twice a year he pays a visit to her and her son to remind him what is really important in life. Just as Karen decides that there's more than one side to every story, Deb arrives at the Café to tell her that she'll have her lawyers draw up the papers to dissolve their partnership. Karen tells her not to do it -- just don't lie to her again. After that Karen heads over to Professor Andy's office. She eats a little crow and apologizes to the guy who ends up to be good after all. Lucas attempts to tell Keith about Jules' ugly past but can't seem to do it because the woman won't want to leave her beau's side. Keith remains deeply in love and deeply in the dark. [back to top]

Between Order and Randomness
Written by Terrence Coli Directed by Bethany Rooney February 1, 2005

What's the drama: Karen packs up all of Lucas' creature comforts in her house because she doesn't want him to live under her roof unless it's by her rules. Her rules include taking the HCM test. So it's bread and water for the rebel boy. Despite her serious lack of experience, Brooke gets herself a job in order to pay her car insurance. She wanted a waitress gig but instead got a job in "PR," dressing up in a giant crab costume and drawing in potential customers in to Carl's Crab Shack. It's humiliating -- but it's cash. Lucas confronts Dan about his little scheme to destroy Keith. But before he can really look like the bad guy Dan tells Lucas that Keith slept with Deb. His plan was originally about revenge but after a few weeks he came to his senses and told Jules to split. She's now in town on her own accord. Taylor continues to make a nuisance of herself at the young Scott home. She even goes so far as to ask Nathan if he was in love with the girl he lost his virginity to. And she does it right in front of lil' sis Haley. That Nathan does have his secrets -- but little does he know that as he and Haley try to reconcile and make their marriage work, she continues to email Chris in NYC.

What's up with Dan: Dan tells Deb that he wants to invite Keith and his new girlfriend over for dinner. Deb thinks a terrible idea. Dan agrees that it may be a bit uncomfortable but it seems like everybody has slept with everyone else anyway -- so what the heck. After the invitation has been extended, Jules calls Dan to tell him that a "family dinner" was never part of the deal. She wants him to know that what she has with Keith is for real now. Dan tells her to come over for grub and prove it. Such the host.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan confronts Taylor about teasing him in front of his wife and attempting to blow their secret. She threatens to really tell her sister the truth…and then he'll be out on his ass. He decides that he doesn't want any more secrets and that it's time to tell his wife that he's known her sister…in a biblical way. That ought to go over well.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas continues to refuse to take the HCM test... and so he continues to live in his very barren room. Andy attempts to get the kid to take the test, but to no avail. Later, Keith pays a visit to Lucas to tell him that he is also afraid to take the test…but he's going to do it for Jules, to give her peace of mind. He suggests that they go take the test together -- for Karen's piece of mind. Lucas agrees, finally!

What's up with Brooke: Brooke spends the six most humiliating hours of her life in a crab costume in front of a good part of the town and only makes fifteen bucks after costume rental and the other charges her boss inflicts upon her. Brooke is furious, but she's stuck because she's really desperate for the cash. All the other crabs are crabby as well so Brooke tells them that they need to make a list of their demands and give them to Carl. She promises she won't get anyone fired and they all agree. Way to go, Norma Rae!

What's up with Felix: Brooke attempts to look up dirt on Carl, but Felix suggests that she try to find a legal way to get their working rights. He even makes her coffee as they settle in for the big research project. The next day, Brooke presents Carl with the employee's list of demands. It seems that the boss is in violation of many laws. He fires them all on the spot. But Brooke threatens to picket in front of his restaurant, telling potential patrons that Carl's fresh fish from Alaska is actually driven in from Jersey. Brooke wins a dollar more an hour and two fifteen-minute breaks for everyone. Then she quits. She has made enough money for her car insurance and she's not so big on the work thing. But she admits that to Felix that helping people did make her feel good. She decides to run for student body president at Tree Hill High.

What's up with Anna: Anna tells Lucas about the kiss between her and Peyton. Well, at least they have something in common. The last time he kissed Peyton, it didn't go well either. She wishes she could just pick a team -- girls or guys. Later, when Anna is filling out her online dating profile she is torn about the type of date she is looking for-male, female or either?

What's up with Keith: Lucas confronts Keith about sleeping with Deb and tells him that Dan will never let that go. Lucas hints at the fact that Dan will stop at nothing to get revenge. Keith tells Lucas that he is not proud of what he did, but that it will never happen again. He's with Jules now and she's the one. Keith and Jules arrive at Dan's house for dinner and as they walk up the steps, Jules tells Keith that she'd like to talk about "something" when they leave. Sounds like the girl wants to come clean. Keith introduces Jules to Dan…as if they've never met. While they're at dinner, Dan wants to know how a gal like Jules ended up with Keith. The topic of secrets comes up-thanks to Dan. Keith attempts to change the subject but Dan presses on, telling Jules that Keith and Deb are more loving than most in-laws and perhaps they can continue the same tradition.

What's up with Haley: Nathan comes to the Café to tell his wife the truth about how he slept with her sister many years ago. Needless to say, Haley is bummed…and kind of grossed out. She confronts Taylor about her past with her husband and Taylor tells her that she knows she's been kissing someone named Chris. She got an IM from the guy while she was on Haley's computer. Saint Haley is just as bad as everyone else. Now that Taylor has something on Haley, she threatens to tell Nathan unless she allows her to continue to live there. When Nathan reluctantly returns home he finds a wife who apologizes to him! He's surprised, but glad to be making up with his wife. He promises not to lie to her anymore but she makes no promise back.

How it all wraps up: After a very long and painful dinner, Dan tells Jules that she has to finish what they started. Then the veiled threat-would Keith ever forgive her if he were to somehow to find out? Haley asks Taylor for advice, but big sis finally comes to her senses and tells her that she'll do the right thing…she always does. Later, when Taylor is online, Chris IMs her, thinking he's getting Haley. Taylor tells the guy that she's in love with Nathan and she can't talk to him anymore…and she signs it Haley. Lucas comes by to talk to Keith who gives his nephew the big news -- he asked Jules to marry him. And she said yes! The next day, when Keith and Lucas are headed to take the HCM test he asks the kid to be his best man at his wedding. Lucas agrees with a heavy heart. He wants so badly to tell Keith the truth. Later, Dan finds Lucas at the basketball court down by the river and tells him that they are the only two who know the truth about Jules and he wants to keep it that way. Lucas asks him what he wants. Dan's sure they can work something out.  [back to top]

The Hero Dies In This One
Written by Jennifer Cecil Directed by Kevin Dowling February 8, 2005

What's the drama: Dan tells Lucas that he wants to show him that he can be a good father. He wants Lucas to move in with him. It seems that Taylor isn't the only annoying individual who won't leave the Scott family alone, Nathan happens to be in front of Haley's computer when Chris IM's her. He arrives at school and throws all the printed out emails in Haley's face. She blames it all on Taylor and Nathan tells her he'll kick the girl out. Haley pretends to be okay with that.

Jake is back for good and everybody, including Coach Whitey, is happy to see him. A lot of people in Tree Hill are ready for help.

What's up with Lucas: The test results are back and Lucas tells his mother that both he and Keith are in the clear. Karen wants to celebrate and Lucas tells her that he's moving in with Dan. He can hardly get the words out without cringing. Karen tells her son that she'll see him move in with Dan over her dead body. She wants to know what the move is really about but Lucas can't spill those beans.

What's up with Brooke: Erica Marsh (who looks and acts strangely like Lucy Camden) introduces herself to Brooke at the Student Government meeting. The girl has a 3.8 GPA and a ton of outside interests. She's also been class president since the 7th grade. Brooke is ready with a very professional campaign, but Erica goes negative immediately. Felix tries to convince Brooke to counter the ugly accusations and is Brooke's right hand guy for the campaign, but she asks Lucas for help with her platform speech. He assists her by showing her a speech by JFK on the topic of courage. He thinks it'll work for her and besides, everything she needs to say is already in her heart. Felix walks in on a very tender moment between old friends. Later, Mouth confesses to Brooke that he threw the brick through her windshield. She tells him that she doesn't think she can be friends with him anymore. He says he can't either-it's too hard. Brooke realizes that it's easier to see what you want instead of the truth. She bases her speech on that very topic.

What's up with Keith: Dan throws Keith a surprise engagement party at the dealership. He toasts the groom to be with a future of "surprises." Dan even offers to spring for the big event. He wants Jules to be "queen for a day."

What's up with Peyton: Peyton is beyond stoked when she books Michelle Branch & Jessica Harp from the band "The Wreckers" to perform at TRIC. She's equally surprised when Brooke plans to use the gig as a launch for her campaign.

What's up with Haley: After Haley denies all to Nathan, he confronts Taylor with her lies, including the one about the kiss. Taylor takes the high road and allows herself to be a scapegoat. When Haley meets Michelle Branch & Jessica Harp backstage before the gig, they tell her they've heard about her-their opening act raved about her. Just then, Chris walks in.

What's up with Dan: Dan finds it necessary to rub the fact that Lucas is moving in with him in Nathan's face. He brings Nathan the last of his belongings so Lucas will have room to move in and declares, "Looks like I'm not the devil after all." Wanna bet?

What's up with Nathan: Nathan is less than pleased when he sees Chris as the opening act at TRIC. He goes backstage to tell the guy that he's ready to kick his ass. Chris tells Nathan that he's just trying to silence the little voice in his head that keeps telling him that his marriage is over and that Haley doesn't love him anymore.

What's up with Karen: Karen knows that Lucas is being manipulated by Dan and comes to the dealership to tell him so. When she barges in to bust the guy, she also barges into Keith's engagement party. Oh, so uncomfortable. Being the good guy, Keith visits Karen at the Café to talk about the engagement and to thank her for allowing him to love her all those years.

How does it all wrap up: Michelle Branch invites Haley to sing the duet with Chris but she's uncomfortable with the idea. When he appears on stage he is booed but dedicated his first song to Haley. When Haley goes backstage to congratulate Chris, he invites her to join the tour. Michelle wants her. They leave that night. It's time to grab the bull by the horns.

Karen confesses to Keith that she is jealous of Jules. Since before Lucas was born, she could always count on him and now that will change. He assures her that they'll always have each other in their lives. It's all good between old friends -- but what about new lovers? Andy witnesses the entire scene.

Later that night, when Mr. and Mrs. Scott return home, Haley tells Nathan that she has been invited to join the tour. It has nothing to do with Chris-it's her one shot to see if she can make it. He asks her to ask him to come with her and wants the truth about the kiss. She admits that she and Chris did kiss and he tells her that if she leaves they're done. She leaves.

As Lucas packs to leave for Dan's, Karen demands that he unpack. She tells her son that they can fight Dan together if he just tells her what he as done. But Lucas refuses to talk. When Lucas arrives at Dan's house, he thanks Dan for paying for his medication. It turns out that Lucas used Keith's negative results letter to show Karen. He has the illness and now he's Dan's prisoner.

The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
Written by R. Lee Fleming, Jr. Directed by Babu Subramaniam February 15, 2005

What’s the drama: When Deb arrives home from her trip, she is surprised to see her new house guest Lucas, staying in her son Nathan’s room. Dan ignores Deb’s complaints telling her there is good news. Haley left Nathan. Looks like all Dan’s schemes are coming together nicely.

Worried about his brother, Lucas stops by to see Nathan. The guy is a mess and kind of stinks but he tells Lucas that’s it’s just 12 weeks—he’ll be fine. He and Haley will work it out when she returns. Nathan finally decides to head to school after his Playstation breaks down. He enters class and immediately whips out a beer (technically a malt liquor—egh) and his teacher reacts as one would expect her to react. She reacts even worse when he calls her a slut.

Peyton invites Jake to an in-store rally. But he tells her that with Jenny and work he has no time for anything else, no time for fun. She reads the comment as him saying he doesn’t have time for her.

Karen continues to be baffled about Lucas and Dan’s living situation. She’s cold to her son and demands that he tell her what Dan has over him. Lucas continues to refuse.

What’s up with Nathan: The new Scott family trio pays a visit to Nathan. They tell him that “they care” and they are there for him. The visit ends up with Nathan punching Dan and telling Lucas to butt out. Deb sticks around to clean up the disaster of an apartment and feels her son’s pain for the first time. Finally, Nathan drives up to the Scott household to see first hand the new arrangement--Lucas living in his home. Nathan tells his brother that if he would have stayed in his place at the river court he would have never met Haley—he ruined his life and he better watch his back.

What’s up with Dan: Jules threatens to tell Keith the truth about her arrangement with Dan. She’s in love with him and she’s tired of the lies. Besides, she’s annoyed that Dan has purchased her wedding gown and wants to keep the man away from her wedding all together. But Dan knows he’s got the girl in a corner and he tells her as much.

What’s up with Lucas: Always the good friend, Lucas leaves message after message for Haley, telling his best friend that he’s worried about her husband. His calls go unanswered. Nathan may have lost his wife, but Lucas lost a best friend, too.

What’s up with Brooke: Felix suddenly splits on a cruise just three days before the big election—leaving Brooke to fend for herself in the murky political waters of politics. Erica Marsh tells Coach Whitey that she’ll give Brooke the election week event schedule. Of course, she doesn't. What’s worse, Erica gets even dirtier with her campaign tactics, including handing out stickers that say “I slept with Brooke Davis.” Then Brooke finds out about the Peer Endorsement Assembly just as it begins (Erica gets the principal to be her peer advocate). When Whitey announces Brooke, she arrives at the podium with no one to speak on her behalf. Mouth steps up to the plate at the last minute. He gives a passionate speech on what a good friend Brooke is and how she looks past the differences between people. She has all the qualities he looks for in a leader. She has heart and spirit and she’s the best person for the job. Brooke (and the rest of the student body) is pleased.

What’s up with Peyton: Peyton and Jake continue to play house with baby Jenny. They seem to be getting closer, despite what Jake said about not having time for anything else aside from Jenny. But after a moral-killing visit from Nathan, where he insists that she is right—people always leave--Peyton tells Jake that she’ll be spending the night in her father’s room from now on. He wonders what’s up.

What’s up with Karen: Andy stops by Dan’s dealership on Karen’s behalf. He attempts to convince the guy to let Lucas go because it’s the right thing to do. When Dan tells him that it’s none of his concern, Andy tells him that it is because it involves the woman that he loves. Dan tries to dismiss Andy as a “kid” but soon realizes that Andy is a force to be reckoned with.

What’s up with Haley: When Haley finally calls Lucas back, he tells her what a wreck her husband is. He tells her that she has to come back; her husband needs her. The call is cut short with no response from Haley.

How does it all wrap up: After the ballots are counted, it is announced that Brooke has won. She is thrilled, but feels for Erica. She advises the girl to not allow herself to be defined by just one thing the way she did for all those years. The next day, Brooke thanks Mouth for his rousing speech. Looks like they are friends again.

That night, Andy and Karen lay in bed and discuss her options regarding Lucas and his living situation. She wants to turn to the courts, but he has another idea. He hires a private detective. The next day, Karen runs into Nathan at the river court and they chat. He opens up to Karen about how he didn’t mean to tell Haley that they were over if she left. He’s afraid that she’ll never come back. Karen comforts Nathan, telling him that she knows Haley; she’s a good person and she’ll come back. He just has to have faith.

After Peyton moves to her father’s room, Jake admits the truth to her. The real reason he came back was not because he was tired of running, but because he wanted to be with her. He admits this and finally, finally, kisses her! Even little Jenny seems to like the kiss and seeing her daddy happy.

Nathan discovers a poster Peyton created just for him. It has two hands with wedding rings and says “People always leave but sometimes they come back.” Nathan finally calls Haley.

Unopened Letters To the World
Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Greg Prange February 22, 2005

What’s the drama: In 1955 the Tree Hill students created a time capsule to be opened in 50 years. Times have not changed much. The students of Tree Hill are assigned to do the same for students to watch in 2055. An anonymous video camera inside a closet provides a perfect confessional for each and every member of the gang. Turns out it’s easier to talk to strangers in the future than present friends and family.

What's up with Brooke: It was really fun to win and all but now Brooke actually has to be Class President. She’s not sure if she’s up for the job but her friend Lucas is. He presents her with a book of quotes that should help her along the way. Not to be outdone, Felix is back from the cruise and ready to party. He decides to throw a bash to celebrate Brooke’s win. When she arrives at the party Brooke is surprised to see how drunk everyone is…including Erica Marsh who is busy with the beer bongs. This so used to be Brooke’s scene…but not anymore.

What’s up with Nathan: Dan apologizes to Nathan for what he said about Haley. But it’s not that easy. As soon as Nathan catches Lucas working at the dealership he promptly quits. Nathan heads home and paints the apartment pink and places clown paintings all around, supposedly to keep Haley away. He’s bitter and drunk most of the time—and he’s the interior decorator from Hell.

What’s up with Anna: While in the time capsule video shoot Anna confesses that she is a bisexual. Later, feeling a bit of regret she asks Mouth to help her break into the school audio visual room to erase her confession. While they are in they decide to check out what all the other students have to say. They are so moved by what most of the students confess that Anna even confesses to Mouth that she told the tape that she was bisexual. It’s easier to tell one person rather than an entire class—even if they are 50 years in the future. Ultimately Anna’s second take has much of the same information. She finally seems to be coming to terms with who she is.

What’s up with Peyton: Jake decides to move out of Peyton’s house and back in with his folks so he and Peyton can start dating. Their first date is set for Friday night at 8:00. Brooke suggests condoms and underwear optional but Peyton wants to take things slow.

What’s up with Dan: While at the mediation to see who gets to have Lucas live with them, Dan schmooses Doug, the mediator. But rather than fall for the guy, Doug wants to know why Dan hasn’t offered any financial support and Karen admits that she didn’t want Dan’s money because he uses it to manipulate people. Doug decides to leave it up to Lucas…who chooses Dan and completely devastates Karen. At least she has hottie Professor Andy to come home to…even if she is in tears.

What’s up with Lucas: Lucas is missing Haley as much as Nathan is…but differently of course. He’s hurt that his best friend didn’t even bother to call him before she split town. He continues to try to make peace with Nathan but it’s difficult at best. Things get really ugly at Felix’s party. Drunk, Nathan steals the keys to Lucas’ car and attempts to leave the party. Always the good guy, Lucas jumps in to the passenger seat as Nathan drives away. Didn’t that kid learn how dangerous it was to ride with the inebriated after his accident with Uncle Keith last year? Nathan actually torments the Tree Hill police and when they pull him over he asks them if they’ll buy him some beer. Guess he’s already had enough. Lucky for him his brother loves him enough to switch places with him. With Lucas in the driver’s seat both of the boys are arrested.

What’s up with Keith: Keith surprises Jules with a new house. Later, when Dan meets with Jules she tells him that she has decided to tell Keith the truth. She won’t walk down the aisle until she does. He tells her that he has changed his mind. As a wedding gift he will not mention their deal to Keith—he never has to know. Rightly she does not believe him.

What’s up with Jake: Peyton and Jake skip Felix’s party for a romantic evening out—Jakes first date since Jenny was born. Their evening is perfect. Peyton confesses to Jake that she has only been with one guy and is a little intimidated by his experience (a’la his daughter Jenny). He tells her he’s just so happy to be with her that he would like to take things slow. Bonus cool points for the guy!

How does it all wrap up: While in jail Lucas immediately calls Karen to come bail him out. She tells him to call the father he loves so much. Nathan comments that Lucas’ mother doesn’t even like him. Ugly words are exchanged. They fight and end up getting handcuffed to the opposite side of the cells. Lucas admits to Nathan that he is living with Dan to protect Keith. Nathan confesses that he spoke to Haley who apologized. He’s still bitter. Lucas reminds his brother that Haley fell for a lesser Nathan so maybe he can forgive her when she is a lesser Haley. This makes sense. Later, when Dan picks up the boys at the jail house Nathan tells him that he knows about the deal he cut with Lucas and he storms off. Lucas tells Dan, “Thank you…Dad.” Karen has a change of heart, arrives at the Tree Hill Police station just in time to see it all. When she gets home she greets an Andy full of information. His investigators have turned up something interesting on Dan. Later Nathan and Lucas work out their frustrations at the river court…and manage to get along again.

Finally, in Lucas’ time capsule submission he admits that he is getting close to Dan so he can tear the man down for once and for all. He wants revenge for all the people Dan has hurt. And Whitey watches his own time capsule submission from 1955…missing his high school sweetheart and wife all the while. Oh those memories.

Somewhere a Clock Is Ticking
Written by Stacy Rukeyser Directed by Billy Dickson March 1, 2005

What's the drama: Haley finally calls Nathan to tell her that she'll be on TV. She and Chris are doing a live interview and she wants him to watch. Nathan is not interested. Surprised? But Haley tells him that none of "this" means anything if she can't share it with him. What? She hasn't shared anything with the guy thus far. Apparently she wants to start now.

Brooke is 24 hours away from being Student Council President and being rich again. Her dad has a final golfing interview with a mega company which she feels he will NAIL. She's thrilled and also stoked that Lucas has agreed to take her to Keith's wedding, just as a friend.

Keith's big day is finally at hand. First thing in the morning Dan brings a gift for Jules-something blue and diamondy. It's her final payment. But they were supposed to be done with the whole scheme. He just wants to say "welcome to the family." Jules tells him to keep the bling and that some day someone will bring him down and she can't wait to watch. He doubts it.

When Deb gets depressed she turns to mamma's little helper-some pills that she leaves in the kitchen cabinet for some reason for all to see. And Lucas does happen to see her popping them after she has an especially disturbing conversation with Nathan.

Andy's private investigator turns up something big on Dan. He's having an affair with someone named Emily Chambers. With all the hideous dirt on Dan Scott that's all they turned up?

What's up with Nathan: Nathan decides to watch the interview. But what he doesn't see is that before the interview airs the publicist tells Haley to lose the wedding ring. She needs to look like she's a couple with Chris or it's not going to work. She protests at first and when the interviewer introduces her to the live audience she even tells him that she's Haley James Scott. But then when the question is posed-are she and Chris a couple in real life, Chris proclaims that the music never lies and Haley doesn't deny it. Nathan is disgusted. He goes and gets drunk.

What's up with Deb: After the scene with the pills, Lucas wants to be sure that Deb is okay. He confronts her. Rather than be thankful for someone who is trying to help, she chastises him for spying on her and tells him that he is out of line and way out of his league.

What's up with Lucas: When Lucas and Brooke end up at the wedding just a bit early he asks her how things are with Felix. She tries to tell him "great," but finally admits that she's feeling a little independent lately and doesn't really feel like she needs a boyfriend these days. Of course she hasn't bothered to inform Felix about the friendship date. Later, when Lucas calls Dan Scott "Dad," Brooke is surprised. He 'fesses to his friend that he's trying it out.

What's up with Karen: As Andy and Karen get ready for the wedding they chat and it accidentally slips out…he loves her. He's been meaning to say that for awhile now. She loves him, too. As Karen helps the groom prepare for the wedding, Andy continues to find out who Emily is. Finally he gets a call and returns later with a photo of the woman-it's Jules!

What's up with Peyton: Peyton plans to take Jake to the wedding, and when he gets one look at her in her outfit he's suddenly torn with the whole "taking it slow" thing. They end up in bed. So much for being on time to the wedding.

What's up with Keith: Keith prepares for his wedding ceremony. He's in total bliss. It appears that Karen is catering the event. They have a talk before the wedding and tell each other that they glad that they are both happy. Keith also thanks Karen for standing up for Jules-she doesn't have anyone else. Yes, Karen and Deb are the bridesmaids.

And when Coach Whitey offers Keith a little nip before the wedding he declines telling his friend he's going to do the wedding sober…unlike Nathan, who makes a scene by trying to talk Keith out of getting married.

How does it all wrap up: Ever the devoted bridesmaid, Karen comes to Jules' dressing room to help Jules (AKA Emily) to get ready for the wedding. She immediately exposes the woman. Jules tells her that she's in love with Keith "for real," but Karen isn't going for it. Jules tells her to leave Keith alone and let him finally be happy. Karen feels like she has to believe it. The bridesmaids start their strut down the aisle (Karen not so smiley) and all seems to be going well as the bridal march kicks in. The organ music begins…and no Jules. Everyone waits. But Jules never walks in. Instead, Andy runs in announcing that Jules has left.

Keith splits the scene right away. Lucas accuses Dan but Karen steps in and admits to them that she threatened Jules-she was going to tell Keith the truth. For some reason, Karen feels guilty about what she did and rather than go to Andy for comfort, she needs to see Keith.

Finally sober, Nathan decides his marriage is over with a ceremonial bonfire. But in a surprise move, his mother arrives at the bonfire with a wad of cash telling him to go get his wife.

Dan Scott celebrates his victorious day with a glass of champagne and some serious gloating. One down and one more to go. Look out Deb. After the long day, Jake, Peyton and Baby Jenny arrive home to find… Nikki waiting for them.

As if Lucas' day wasn't bad enough, he walks in on a distraught Brooke. Seems her dad got the job-it's in California and they're moving the following week.

Something I can Never Have
Written by Mike Herro and David Strauss Directed by Paul Johansson April 19, 2005

What's the drama: Upon her sudden return to town, Nikki confronts Jake and Peyton. It seems the wily gal had a little custody hearing in Seattle (without Jake) and since the father didn't show up, sole custody of Jenny was awarded to her. For some reason, she brings no proof of her supposed custody, so they defy her. But Nikki swears she'll be back the next morning with Tree Hill's finest.

Karen waits all night at Keith's place for him to come home but he never does. The next morning, Lucas meets her over there and finally tells her what he's been up to -- how he knew about the deal between Dan and Jules but didn't want to hurt Keith (not a word about the fact that he has a genetic heart disease though). Just as Karen asks Lucas how he found out about Dan and Jules, Keith walks in the door. They tell him a little about the deal Dan struck with his ex-finance. He's hurt that they kept the secret from him.

Anna wanders into the garage and finds physical proof that Felix was the one who vandalized Peyton's locker. He tells his sister that it was better Peyton than her. But she's feeling the guilt. He just did it to get the attention off of her and back on to Peyton where it belongs. If he only knew.

Armed with his new knowledge, Keith confronts Dan at his dealership. Naturally, Dan tells Keith that he planned the whole scheme with Jules-he deserved it after sleeping with his wife and making him have a heart attack. The two come to fisticuffs and it's not a pretty sight. Dan fires Keith… as if he was coming back to that workplace, ever. Then, not unlike an unsatisfied customer, Keith throws a tire rim through the window. He tells his brother, "I've got nothing left to lose, but you do…remember that."

What's up with Brooke: Brooke and Peyton wax poetic about walking together to class for the last time. They can't believe that Brooke has to move to California. Later, as she moves out Brooke happens upon the new girl who will be moving into her house. The girl is bummed that the town is small and there appear to be no cute boys around. She unintentionally insults Brooke, who teases her back.

What's up with Keith: Karen finally catches up to Keith. She tells him that she didn't know about Jules until right before the wedding. She believes that Jules truly loves him. Keith tells her that he would like to find out the truth. Karen turns over the file she and Andy received from the private investigator and enlightens Keith. Despite Dan's worst intentions, because of him she has the one person she cares for most in the world -- maybe he can too.

What's up with Anna: Anna tells Peyton that it was Felix who vandalized her locker and apologizes to her for him. Peyton tells her that she's not surprised but it's she who deserves an apology from him.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas tells his mother that he won't be moving home. If Dan could do this to his own brother, what else could he be up to? Lucas claims he wants to stay close to the enemy. Karen is unhappy with his decision but still buys his lies.

What's up with Felix: Felix is called into the principal's office where all the evidence that points to him being the vandal is sitting on the desk. The principal tells him, "Shut the door Felix. It's the one without the word DYKE spray-painted on it." Busted! Later, Felix takes out his frustrations on his sister. He is pompous and figures that no one will even care when they find out he did it. Anna points out that Brooke will most likely care.

What's up with Peyton: Nikki wanders Tree Hill pestering Peyton and searching for Jake. Peyton fears that Jake won't go to court to challenge Nikki. He has the urge to take off again. He can't take the idea of not getting custody of Jenny. Andy advises him to get a lawyer and offers to pay for it. What a guy, that Andy!

Later as Brooke and Peyton ponder how much her life is falling apart, Peyton tells her friend what Felix did to her. Brooke immediately marches over to Felix's house and announces that they're over. That relationship had pretty much fizzled out already anyway.

What's up with Dan: When Lucas shows up at Dan's house, Dan expects it's to say goodbye. But the kid tells his father he's staying-he kept his word about Keith and besides, he's paying for his medicine. What's the boy to do? Dan is happy to have him.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan drives all night to find his wife. He arrives backstage looking for Haley Scott-er, James. Once in her dressing room he is pleased to see their wedding photos on her mirror. She's surprised to see her husband, hugs him and tells him how much she misses him. He tells her that he married her so they can be together, gives the big romantic speech and offers to come with her on tour. He is a bit perturbed that she's not wearing her wedding ring and when he asks about it she explains that perhaps they rushed into things. She's not with Chris, it was never about that, but she does need some time to figure out what she wants to do. She asks him to stay and they can talk after the show.

How does it all wrap up: Felix is pissed because his parents have decided to send him to military school. He wonders why he and Anna don't have each other's back like they used to. Anna finally admits to him that she was so angry because she is the one who is the "dyke." All the rumors were true. He is stunned.

Later Lucas tells Brooke how sorry he is about her and Felix breaking up. Yeah, right. She is too busy trying to think of how she'll remember Tree Hill. He guides her to his house (well, really Karen's house since he doesn't live there anymore). It seems that he convinced Karen to talk to Brooke's folks who agreed to let her live with Karen until the summer. She has an open room, after all. Karen welcomes Brooke to the house -- with some conditions. She has more rules than Brooke's parents and Brooke is pleased -- it's just like having a real mom.

Jake tells Peyton that he's done with the running. He's ready to fight for custody of his daughter. He's just trying to get adjusted to the twosome becoming a threesome. He's staying in town.

Keith, however, is leaving. He packs up his truck and Lucas tells him to stay. Keith is most hurt that his nephew didn't tell him the truth -- he thought he meant more to him. When Lucas asks him if he will be coming back, Keith tells him that for once in his life he's not sure he has anything to come back for.

When Haley finishes her set, Nathan is gone.  [back to top]

Lonesome Road
Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Lev L. Shapiro November 30, 2004

Written by John Norris Directed by Tom Wright April 26, 2005

What's the drama: While driving home through Alabama, Nathan receives a call from his sister-in-law Taylor. She wants to know what's in a gin and tonic. She's bartending in Athens Georgia, at a lively dive called "The Swinging Donkey." Very skanky. Nathan pays a surprise visit and she invites him to stay the night. Very skanky.

Lucas helps Jake, who needs a place to hide from the law. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. He finds temporary refuge with baby Jenny at Nathan's apartment. Later, Jake's lawyer tells him it's best to turn himself in, give up Jenny and in two or three months he'll get his daughter back -- otherwise it's jail time for Jakie.

At work, Lucas appears tired and withdrawn. Dan tells him to take the day off the next day and hit the river court. Right after he leaves, Lucas crawls over Dan's desk and into the ceiling to check out his dad's secret hiding place. There he discovers wads and wads of cash and a ledger of some kind. Later Lucas asks the wise sage Andy why Dan doesn't keep the cash in a bank where it's safe. Andy tells him it's because it's dirty and agrees to help him get the ledger.

An old friend, Darby, shows up at Anna's door.

What's up with Nathan: Nathan and Taylor do shots at her bar, which turns out to be a poor man's version of "Coyote Ugly." Seems whenever Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" plays on the juke box the gals hop up on the bar and dance. They pull Nathan up on the bar with them and pelvic thrust around the fella in a very un-family-like way.

Later, Nathan and Taylor talk about his relationship with Haley. He figures it's not over 'til it's over. But Taylor wants to know what is up for "tonight." Nathan tells her that if he makes the next basket at the bar game he's playing then they'll go upstairs and do whatever he likes. Of course he makes the shot and of course they go upstairs. That's some sister Haley has... not to mention some husband!

What's up with Peyton: Nikki tells Peyton that she wants to meet with Jake down at the river court that night. Jake meets up with Nikki at her hotel, and she tries to tell the guy that Jenny isn't really her daughter. Jake tells her that no matter what, Jenny is really his daughter and always has been. The next day Luke and Peyton talk Whitey into taking some sense into Jake. Jake refuses to give up his daughter and explains why. He tells his coach that the one time that he let Nikki take care of Jenny he found the girls late that night in the car in front of a bar. Nikki was passed out in the front seat and Jenny was shivering from the cold in the back -- not even covered with a blanket. He couldn't trust Nikki with the baby for one night, and there's no way he can trust her for three months.

What's up with Anna: Anna and her ex-girlfriend Darby catch up. Anna finds out what kind of fallout her ex experienced after the rumors took over and she and her family split town. Darby tells her that it was difficult but she wouldn't change a thing -- she was glad they were together and that she came out. It was all worth it. Anna asks her friend how it was to come out to her family. Darby suggests that she practice in front of a mirror before she talks to her parents. Anna practices but finds it tough; she's afraid that she'll disappoint them but is tired of disappointing herself.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas and Andy sneak into Scott Motors late at night all incognito style, with flashlights and the intent to snoop. To their surprise, the money and the ledger are gone. Andy realizes that Dan knows that Lucas knows about the money. Andy calls game over but Lucas isn't ready to give up yet. Andy tells the kid that if there's any way Dan knows about Lucas' knowledge, he's got to get out of the house immediately.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke's cheer squad begs her to come out with them. They're worried that since she began the whole presidency thing she's been "drifting." Despite the fact that she is expected at Karen's Café, Brooke heads out with the squad and returns late that night. Drunk. Karen is disappointed and grounds her.

The next day when Brooke wants to head out for a quick run, Karen reminds her that being grounded means that she doesn't get to go out at all. Instead she gives her a list of chores to do. Brooke starts to think that this real parent gig ain't so cool after all. Later, Lucas actually offers to help Brooke with her chores. He tells her, "Anything for you." How can she not see that the guy is totally digging her?

What's up with Jake: Reluctantly, Jake says his goodbyes one more time. He's leaving and he's going alone -- even though Peyton offers to go with. Peyton's heart is broken, but not for long. What Jake didn't tell her is that his real plan is to turn himself in to the police. So he'll be around... just behind bars.

How does it all wrap up: After they go upstairs, Nathan ends up doing absolutely nothing with Taylor. He tells her that he can't do it but she claims that she knew that all along. She says she was just waiting for him to figure that out. Yeah, right!

The next day Nathan tries to leave town without seeing Taylor. He apologizes to her for hurting her feelings the night before. She tells her bro-in-law that if Haley won't be there for him, he will need to start being there for himself. Good advice from a gal who dances on bars for a living.

Meanwhile, Anna comes to see Lucas after she comes out to her parents. How did they react? They cried but told her that they loved her. That's what she really wanted to hear. Anna has decided to go back to her boarding school and become the person who she really is. She's leaving town, and she wanted to say goodbye. She tells Lucas that she's a better person for knowing him.

Later when a huge "must-attend" party comes up Brooke is tempted to go but stays home and does chores. When Karen finds out she decides to let her new roommate off the hook. She's learned her lesson.

Dan calls Lucas to his office for a chat. He's upgrading the security system -- too many people know the pass code. He is also installing a camera in his office. Strange timing. After their little chat, Lucas turns to leave and Dan calls out after him as he eyes the newly installed security camera, "I'll be seeing you."

When Nathan arrives home, he starts to listen to a message from Haley but erases it before she gets anything out. He also takes his wedding ring and puts it away in a drawer. Talk about closure.

Finally, after Jake turns himself in, Tree Hill's finest and Nikki come search Peyton's house for Jenny. They turn up nothing. She comes to visit Jake in jail. He won't tell her where the baby is but assures her that she is safe. Peyton tells him that she loves him. He loves her too. Later we see Jenny safe…with Coach Whitey. What a softie that guy is!

I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Written by Mark Schwahn Directed by Tom Wright May 3, 2005

What’s the drama: After a call from Deb, Uncle Cooper Lee surprises Nathan with a visit. Coop is a big-time race car driver. He’s wondering what is up with his nephew and his estranged wife. It’s clear that Coop is there for a little emotional upkeep.

Before heading out on the road trip with Nathan and Cooper, Lucas stashes some shredded papers in his old closet. Brooke is curious. The two Scott brothers and Cooper take a trip to the track and meet legendary driver Jeff Burton.

Meanwhile, Dan shows up to “audit” a business ethics class taught by our favorite professor Andy and insinuates to the class in his own evil Dan way, that their professor and one of his students are dating and said student is getting an “A.” Andy and Karen are humiliated and the rest of the class is disgusted. Karen wasn’t so sure how she would break the news about how Dan paid Jules to break Keith’s heart but after that she just straight up tells the woman.

What’s up with Nathan: While at the track Nathan is reintroduced to Daytona, the crew manager’s kid who has grown up considerably. Daytona’s little brother Jared is also reintroduced and he asks Nathan how the whole marriage thing is going. Jared figures that Nathan will be divorced before he even gets a girl to date him. Nathan seems bummed at the thought of that.

Cooper invites the boys to stay, learn the ropes and drive the cars the next day. Daytona gives the boys a little driving lesson and warns them that if they make a mistake at 160 mph, they’ll have more than their heart broken.

What’s up with Deb: Deb continues to pop the little white pills she keeps in her kitchen pantry—though it’s clear that before she does, she’s not happy about it.

What’s up with Peyton: Karen and Brooke are worried about Peyton so they plan a girls' day of fun and they include Deb -- who joins the group and immediately grabs a cocktail. Later, when Brooke drops Deb off, she seems reluctant to go into her big expensive house.

What’s up with Andy: Andy pays a visit to Karen at the club and announces that he’s been reported to the dean. He has a meeting with him. When the dean confronts Andy, he gives him two options: quit or break up with his student girlfriend. He quits. He loves Karen more than teaching and he tells her so.

What’s up with Brooke: That evening, Brooke is the driver for her Safe Rides Program. As Brooke drops Deb off at home, she answers another call and picks up a drunk Mouth. But the jig is up quickly when he admits that he isn’t really drunk -- he just wanted to hang with her and her knew she was driving that night. Later that evening, Mouth and Brooke pick up Erica Marsh. She wasn’t really drunk either, but some guys from Felix’s party treated her badly. They got out of hand and she got scared and called. All three end up going for some grub. When the three part ways, Erica asks Mouth to walk home with her—there’s clearly something there. When they arrive at Erica’s house, she kisses him goodnight. Could this be the start of something special?

What’s up with Dan: When Dan arrives at work, he is surprised to find Andy behind his desk. Andy wants to philosophize and Dan wants to brawl. Andy informs Dan that he lost his teaching position. Andy wants to know if Dan believes in anything and lets him know that he, himself is a big believer in karma. He explains that most of the time tragedy befalls a man who just isn’t living right. He knows that karma will get Dan in the long run. As Andy leaves, the unmoved Dan offers him a job application…now that he’s unemployed.

The next morning, as Dan goes out to get the paper, he finds his wife passed out in the front garden. Instead of waking her, he turns the sprinklers on her.

How does it all wrap up: The night before the race, Cooper has a heart-to-heart with Nathan about making sacrifices for the ones they love. Cooper mentions that maybe Nathan changed so much while they were together that Haley felt compelled to leave. Would he have quit basketball back when they got together? Maybe Nathan is not the person Haley fell in love with and maybe Haley isn’t the person he thought she was. People change. It hurts, but you’d be surprised at how therapeutic 200 mphcan be.

That night Peyton calls in to the Safe Rides Program and asks Brooke if she can come pick her up—she needs a little pick up and would love to feel safe for just one night. Brooke is there for her friend.

The next day at the track, it’s every man (and woman) for himself. The gang is warned not to take their cars too fast. The green flag waves -- and they're off! Once instigated, Nathan seems to pour on the speed and in his last lap Nathan passes Cooper and then bumps his nephew. After he’s beaten, Nathan decides to take a non-victory lap. Everyone calls out to him in his helmet earpiece -- he’s going too fast; he’s breaking all the pit road rules. Nathan tells them he needs the 200 mph therapy. He speeds up, strikes the wall and begins a tail-spin. Lucas drags him from the fiery crash and it appears that Nathan will need therapy all right, but a different kind altogether. Later, Daytona mentions that it almost seemed as if the guy aimed for the wall. Nathan is quickly dispatched to the hospital. As he is rushed into surgery, he makes Lucas promise not to call Haley.

Meanwhile, Whitey comes to visit Peyton. He’s been to visit Jake, and they need to talk. She’s bummed because Jake doesn’t want her to visit him in jail anymore—it’s too hard. Has she ever been to Florida? He tells her there’s a little town just off the Gulf of Mexico that’s very close to paradise. It’s a good place to raise a child—or at least take one to be safe until her daddy can come for her.

When Deb finally is able to confront Dan, she tells him that she wished that he would die. She informs him that she prayed for him to die last year after his heart attack. She announces that her bags are packed and she is leaving because if they continue to live together one of them will die. Just then they get the call from the hospital. Their son needs them. As they arrive at the hospital, Deb offers to donate blood for her son but is refused because it was “unusable.” Dan wants to know how long she has been abusing prescription drugs. She tells him since she quit her job and that she does it because she is married to him.

Brooke shows up to comfort Lucas as he waits for news about his brother. Karen and Andy arrive at the hospital and Andy asks Dan how his karma is.

Lifetime Piling Up
Written by Mark B. Perry Directed by Les Butler May 10, 2005

What’s the drama: Following his racecar accident, a comatose Nathan dreams of what life would have been like if Dan had stayed with Karen and Lucas instead of marrying Deb.

Nathan is hangin’, playing a little round ball with Mouth, Skills and the guys at the River Court. He’s best buddies with Haley, while Lucas drives a convertible sports car and dates Peyton.

Keith owns Scott Motors—he’s confident and very cocky. His employee, Dan, is flaky and disorganized. Karen is cranky, and Deb runs the local bar, “Deb’s Den,” and doesn’t drink a drop of alcohol.

What’s up with Nathan: Nathan made it as a finalist at the High Flyers basketball camp of his dreams. Coach Whitey signed the papers for him to register, which peeves Dan to no end. Whitey pays a visit to Nathan and he needs to be sure he can hold his own with a real team. He’d like to see him beat Lucas. He doesn’t necessarily have to join the Ravens team, but he needs to see how he’d stand up to his brother. Nathan has his reservations, but agrees to a game down by the River Court. While Nathan and Haley are best friends, it’s clear that there’s plenty of sexual tension. He even gives her the Cracker Jack prize bracelet.

What’s up with Lucas: When Whitey closes up the gym, Lucas and the rest of the Ravens team train for the High Flyers entrance down at the River Court. Nathan informs his brother that he is a finalist. Only one kid from each high school can make it. May the best Scott win. Lucas’ smarmy friend Tim even suggests that Lucas seduce the tutor to distract the other Scott. Now who would do that?

What’s up with Brooke: Brooke has taken an interest in Nathan and lets him know as much when she shows up naked in the boy’s shower. Shy and reserved, the guy runs away. He later shares his experience with his best friend Haley. They laugh about it.

What’s up with Dan: Dan relives his glory days by watching his triumphant games on VHS over, and over again. He realizes that Nathan is a threat to his son’s chances at High Flyers. He even offers 500 bucks for Nathan to drop out of the High Flyers try outs. Deb encourages Nathan to shut Dan out. Instead, it’s the River Court team against Lucas’ Ravens.

What’s up with Karen: Karen and Keith are having a torrid affair behind Dan’s back. Keith wants Karen to leave Dan but she’s sticking with the man and her unhappy marriage for Lucas’ sake. Karen and Lucas don’t have the close relationship she would like to have; in fact, the guy may even know about her situation with Uncle Keith.

What’s up with Haley: Haley admits to Nathan that her secret dream is to be a singer. Later, Peyton admits to Haley that Lucas will do anything to get into High Flyers so she should watch her back…and Nathan’s. She warns Nathan, who isn’t afraid.

Later, Lucas and the Ravens kidnap Nathan in an attempt to intimidate him. He’s been training for the High Flyers since junior high and he’s the Scott who belongs there. He tells Nathan to drop out, don’t bother showing up to the River Court game and leaves him in the middle of nowhere.

What’s up with Peyton: When Lucas shows up to pick up Peyton for the game, she tells him they are done. She is starting to see who he really is. He figures it’s her loss. After the kidnapping, Nathan wanders aimlessly. Peyton heads to the location where she knows all Lucas’ kidnapping victims end. She tells him he has a right to beat Lucas fair and square and tells him she is going to take him to the game so he can do just that.

How does it all wrap up: Nathan is nowhere to be found as the River Court game begins to look like a forfeit. Deb and Haley worry. Finally, Nathan arrives in Peyton’s car and announces that it’s going to be a one-on-one game between him and Lucas. Plenty of back-and-forth basketball action later, the game is close, with Lucas resorting to unsportsmanlike conduct. As Nathan heads over to make the winning basket, he tells Lucas, “This is for my mom.” Coach Whitey tells Karen and Dan that it looks like Nathan is going to High Flyers after all. After the game, the brothers shake on it and strangely, Lucas tells Nathan congratulations and to come back to them soon. Nathan is perplexed. Haley gives Nathan back his wedding ring and he’s even more confused.

Back in the real world, Nathan wakes up yelling Haley’s name. Lucas is at his bedside and welcomes him back. Lucas tells him the doctor said he will be fine. Nathan tells his brother about his weird bizzaro world dream where they switched places. Lucas tells Nathan that even though he asked him not to, he called Haley. She is his wife, and she needed to know. He also asks him why there weren’t any brake marks on the track. Did he do it on purpose? Nathan is about to answer when Deb walks in. He apologizes to her for being a jerk lately. She admits that she has not been a good, strong mother lately. She will be doing her own healing as he does. He tells her that he has her back. After his dream they share an unusual closeness. Dan walks in and tells him he’s glad to see he’s awake. Then he walks out.

Meanwhile, Brooke pieces together the shredded document Lucas left behind — it’s a receipt for a car. Karen tries to reach Keith with no success, and Deb checks into a rehab clinic. Finally, Nathan calls Haley, who tells him that she is coming home tomorrow. He tells her not to come home; he doesn’t want her to. She should follow her dream the way he will be following his. They don’t want to end up resenting each other.

What Could Have Been

What's the drama: Nathan returns home from the hospital to no wife but plenty of overdue bills, as well as an eviction notice. To make matters worse, he has a hideous $100,000 hospital bill he can't pay. Lucas forces his brother to confront what really happened out on the track and Nathan tells him that he "screwed up and hit the wall…that is it."

Brooke pieces together the shreddings that Lucas left in his closet at home. It's a bill of sale for a used car some random named gal purchased in cash from the dealership. Lucas guesses that Dan's running some kind of scam.

Peyton feels helpless waiting for Jake to get out of the big house. But instead of helping him, which is pretty much out of their hands, Lucas talks her into doing a little fundraiser for Nathan. The gang gets together and decides to do a movie night at TRIC, popcorn and all.

What's up with Nathan: While on the phone with the hospital billing company, Nathan discovers that his debt has been paid. He thinks it was his wife, who was in charge of their cash flow and insurance. He doesn't want a fundraiser anymore, but Lucas convinces him to do it anyway.

What's up with Lucas: Lucas discovers that Dan is running a serious scam at his dealership and tells Nathan about it. The brothers agree to team up to bring their dad down. They look to Andy, who figures if they can find where Dan hides his cash, they'll have everything they need to ruin him.

What's up with Peyton: Jake still won't allow Peyton to visit him in jail, and she grows more and more bummed by the day. Later, as the gang gets ready for the fundraiser, Peyton takes Nathan aside and asks him if he aimed for that wall at the track. He admits that he doesn't know. At the time he was thinking about Haley, so he may have aimed, but he feels different now.

What's up with Brooke: Brooke feels that her whole "friends" thing with Lucas is really working out, but Peyton realizes that her best friend is vibing on the guy again, and she okays it if she wants to go there one more time. Brooke has her doubts that they could make it as a couple if they couldn't do it before. But they're not exactly the same people this time around, are they?

Later, at the fundraiser as they sit together and Lucas admits that he doesn't know what he would have done without her lately.

What's up with Haley: Haley asks for a little time off from the tour but they tell her if she leaves, she'll have to be replaced. How bad does she want the big time? Later she's offered a solo act, but tells them that she's leaving to return to her husband. Her mistake was leaving him in the first place. She's just now realizing this?

What's up with Dan: Nathan receives a letter from his mom in rehab. In it, she expresses a want for all three of them to be together again. If she can change, perhaps so can Dan. She'd like to try to be a family again. Nathan has his doubts, but he considers it…for his mom. As it turns out, Dan paid Nathan's hospital bills and cleans up his troubles with rent. Dan is afraid that he made the wrong choice when he was young and doesn't want Nathan to do the same thing. He wants him to ask Haley for an annulment. Later, Nathan calls his mother to tell her he loves her and assure her that things will be different. It will be the way she wants it to be. And Dan pays a visit Haley on the road to present her with the annulment papers…signed by Nathan.

What's up with Karen: She sits at home and pines for Keith, looking at their old photos even though she has a perfectly good man right at home with her. She finally emails the guy to let him know that she is there for him now and always. He emails her back a simple "Thank you."

How does it all wrap up: Lucas feels like he's been so caught up with Peyton and Nathan that he hasn't had time to check in with Brooke. When he does, she tells him that she's doing great, but she's nervous about opening up her heart again and getting hurt. Later, Brooke decides to take a chance rather than wonder what could have been. Just as she begins to ask Lucas about getting back together, she finds a bunch of relationship paraphernalia from when he and Peyton were together. Old wounds are reopened and the hurt is too bad so she ends up telling Lucas that they're doing great as friends and they shouldn't screw it up.

Not only does Nathan decide to move home, but he asks Lucas to back off and stop going after Dan. He owes it to his family to give it another try. Lucas agrees to do it for his brother.

Andy found out where almost $100,000 smackeroos of Dan's went -- he's been making small cash payments into a college fund for Lucas. Andy offers to destroy the papers and walk away but Lucas (despite what he said to his brother) thinks they should take it all the way -- the man hurts everyone he touches. He tells Andy not to stop until he has everything he needs to destroy Dan Scott. Just as Nathan moves back to the Scott Manor, Lucas announces that he'll be moving home. Now that Lucas has moved home, Karen wants to set some new ground rules but Brooke assures her that they are just friends -- nothing more. Lucas walks out of the room, visibly hurt.
